HUZUR RADHASOAMI SAHEB’S SHABDS

 (1)

Now attend Satsang carefully. You have been  endowed with the precious human form. You will  not have such an opportunity again. (1) The pleasures derived from wife and progeny, wealth  and property and name and fame ultimately  turn painful. (2) Therefore, keep yourself aloof from them, adopt the saran of Guru, and attend Satsang. (3) I caution you that this world and all its paraphernalia are transitory like a dream. (4) False is your body, false your wealth. False is your mind which is so strongly attached to them. (5) Only Satsang, Sat Guru and Nam are true. (6) 0, ye gentle one (Surat), act upon what I say, and you will be released from the cycle of births and deaths. (7) Radhasoami counsels you to ascend to  Nabh (first heavenly sphere) and to penetrate into Shabd. (8)

(2)

Why are you drifting in the world ? Your stay here is for four days only. (1) All those who  surround you are selfish. (2) Mother and father, and  wife and son, all will part company in the end. (3) There is none except Sat Guru who can effect your redemption. (4) Without Nam (word) Jivas are roaming about in the cycle of eightyfour. (5) Adorned with the crown of Surat on the head, let your mind ascend high with the dignity and grandeur of a bridegroom. On meeting the bride-like captivating dhun at Trikuti, it will stop there. (6-7) Engage yourself in the Dhyan (contemplation) of Radhasoami all day and night. (8)

(3)

The world is pitch dark and the body is  full of vice. (1) The states of wakefulness and dream are both marked by forgetfulness. The ignorant Jiva is involved in a labyrinth. (2) He has become an alien here. He has lost memory of his original home. (3) He is wandering in different khans (species), being cast from one body to another. (4) All the time he is sad, undergoing pain and suffering. Who is there to listen  to his wailings ? He cries in vain. He will be cast into  hell and suffer the tortures of Jama. (5-6) After  innumerable wanderings, he has got the noble  human form. But alas ! he is smitten here by the  mind and senses. (7) Sant Sat Guru admonishes him  again and again, and shows the path through the  tenth door. (8) But the Jiva does not pay attention to His words, and rushes again and again towards  the nine doors. (9) He sticks to bogus religions  and thus wastes his time. He does not take to  Surat Shabd Yoga, by which he would be redeemed.  (10) He will gain nothing by churning water;  while he is too careless to churn milk. (11) How far should I go on relating his misfortunes ? He indulges in outward rites, rituals and observances. (12) He does not apply his mind to the internal practice (of Surat Shabd Yoga). (13) All the learned devote themselves to the Vedas, religious books, codes of laws and mythological stories. (14) But without Sat Guru and Surat Shabd Yoga, no one can cross the ocean of worldliness. (15) I tender you this sound advice, my dear, now accept and act upon it. (16) Radhasoami says, "Raise your Surat to the gate of nabh (sky, heaven)". (17)

(4)

Beware that this world is a snare. Your wealth will be of no avail. (1) Hold fast to the Feet of Guru, take the support of Nam and attend Satsang. Give thought to this matter. (2) Your mind is under the sway of passion and anger. You are put on the wrong path by your karams (actions). (3) What more should I speak of the plight of this mind ? It becomes embarrassed with grief and illness. (4) You see with your own eyes that Jama is devouring Jivas, and the whole world is full of pain and suffering. (5) Even then you do not awake, and adopt measures to shield yourself. The terrible Kal is striking Jivas every moment. (6) Sat Guru Radhasoami Dayal, in His grace and mercy, redeems them by taking them in His Saran (care and protection). (7)

(5)

Fear and regard for the world mar progress,  and attachment for the world is a noose. (1)  Attachment to the family causes distress. Although  a high-burn maiden, you are married to Kal. (2)  Karma (action) has put a halter round your neck  and Jama heartily laughs at you. (3) You are so  much attached to the body that you never think  of your death. (4) You are swallowed up by  pride and egotism. You have put a heavy load of karmas on your head. (5) You did win the game but ultimately lost it; you secured the precious human form but did not take steps to curb mundane desires. (6) Radhasoami calls on you to make endeavours in right earnest. (7) Improve your lot in the company of Guru. Enjoy the infinite bliss of Nam. (8)

(6)

0 traveller ! Beware ! swindlers have spread  their nets. (1) Do not go alone on this path; without the guidance of Guru, you will not get through. (2) Cheats and swindlers will rob you of your capital, and keep you under their subjugation. (3) They have intercepted the whole world. In the absence of Guru, all are being looted. (4) 0 my friend ! Pay heed to my words. Leave the  company of swindlers, and catch hold of Guru's  hem. (5) There is no protector other than Guru.  I repeat it again and again. (6) Engender strong love  for Guru, and you will be taken to your destination.  (7) The essence of all endeavours is to cling to  the Holy Feet of Guru. It will detach you from  the pleasures of the senses. (8) These pleasures (of the senses) are the swindlers; they are swindling  Jivas. Radhasoami enjoins upon you to come under  His saran (protection) and He will save you. Make  Nam your constant companion and you will attain  salvation. (9-10)

(7)

Among your associates and companions none  is a friend. Why do you abide among these robbers  and cheats ? (1) Awake and attach yourself to  Satsang. Guru will then dye you in pure Nam.  (2) Wealth and property will not avail you. Give  them up. (3) Accomplish your task in this day-time,  for ahead is the night dark. (4) You will  not get this human form again. You will wander  in the wilderness of Chaurasi. (5) Serve Guru and secure His pleasure. Conform to this mode of devotion. (6) Bear in mind that except Guru you have no true friend. (7) Do not get entangled in the meshes of the world. Keep yourself engaged in Bhajan (devotion, prayers) day and night. (8) Follow the precepts of Sadh and Guru and remain  indifferent to the world. (9) Give up cunning and  craft. Why do you plunge yourself into a deplorable condition ? (10) Perform Sumiran and serve Guru. Elevate your Surat to higher regions this very day. (11) Otherwise  kal (tomorrow),  Kal will settle accounts with you. And you will be thrown into the fire of hell. (12) Take heed. It is not known what may happen next moment. (13) Radhasoami explains this to you. One admonition should be enough. (14)

(8)

Be afraid of death day and night. One day you will be overwhelmed with difficulties and troubles. The agents of Jama (Kal) will trample you. (1) You give no thought to that day. You are lost in pleasures now. (2) One day, four carriers will take you to the crematorium on a bier. (3) Brothers, kinsmen, relatives, will all be running as pall-bearers. (4) They will place you at the crematorium. Your wife will mourn  with her hair dishevelled in agony. (5) Here, you will be burnt in fire. There, you will find abode in hell. (6) As you do not now heed the advice of Sat Guru, you are ruining your life both in this world and in the world hereafter. (7) On that day, you will repent very much. You are cutting your own throat. (8) Manhood is gone and old age has arrived. How long will the world bear company ? (9) Take warning. Bow down your head at the Holy Feet of Guru. (10) Radhasoami has now explained you everything. (11)

(9)

On coming here, you have got yourself tied to  gross bondages. The first bondage is of body, the  second of wife, the third of son and the fourth of  grandson and so on and so forth.(1-2) Your grandson may beget a gradson and thus there will be  no end to your bondages. (3) I need not describe other bondages such as wealth, property and business. (4) You are bound fourfold, fivefold and sevenfold. (5) How can you now secure release ? You are tied to a heavy stake. (6) You cannot be released except by death. You do not heed advice, while alive. (7) Notion of (worldly) honour and (family) prestige is the strongest of all shackles. (8) You do not give up adherence to traditions and customs because you fear that if you do so, worldly misfortune would befall you. (9) How far should I relate your sufferings ? You are doomed to wander in the form of a ghost or goblin. (10) You have taken this world to be real and permanent. How can you then attain Nam. (11)  Fetters are put on your feet. You are handcuffed.  Your neck is chained. You are imprisoned  in a black hole where your sufferings are  worse. (12) The wicked Kal has tied you down in various ways. But you feel merry  and remain submerged in the world. (13) You  are a fool to take pains for pleasures. What should  I say to such a conceited fellow ! (14) Feel ashamed of your conduct. Have some sense of  decency and good name. Otherwise, you will have  to undergo punishment in hell. (15) If you now  adopt the saran of Radhasoami you will get some  gift from Him. (16)

(10)

O mind ! leave this region of pain and pleasure.  Ascend up and come in contact with True Nam.  (1) Your stay is for four days. Thereafter you  have to depart from this hamlet (body). (2) Wealth  and wife and sons and grandsons will be of no avail. (3) Two currents of incoming and outgoing breath are flowing continuously. A day will come  when there will remain only the lifeless skin. (4)  This body is like a leather bag (for carrying water). It  is discharging foul matter all the twentyfour hours.  (5) You are heedless and careless, paying no  attention to the true and real Shabd. (6) Maya  in the form of woman is following you. Why do  you not give up kam (lust and passion) ? (7)  But you cannot get rid of her without the days  (grace and mercy) of Guru. Therefore, go on  uttering Guru's Name. (8) Enshrine His form  in your heart and keep your mind under restraint  and check. (9) He is merciful and compassionate.  He would feel pity for you and help you every  moment. (10) Abstain from bhogs (pleasures). Why do you invite illness for yourself. ? There is no comfort in it. (11) 0 dear ! act upon Guru's advice. Then will you secure peace and rest. (12) He will remove all your troubles and miseries, and grant you abode in the eternal region. (13) Radhasoami enjoins upon you to seek Nij Nam. (14)

(11)

The whole world is being dissipated. Seeing this pitiable condition, I caution you again and  again. (1) In all the four Yugas, you remained  subjected to transmigration, undergoing severe  torments of hell. (2) Innumerable lives have been  spent in suffering and pain. Nowhere could you  secure peace for a moment. (3) You suffered from  disasters and adversities, as a result of your good  and evil acts, and because you did not fall at the  Holy Feet of Sat Guru. (4) Now you have been blessed with this human form. You should engage in Bhakti, so that the karams (effects of good and evil acts) be eradicated and washed away. (5) If you miss this opportunity, you will not be forgiven; you will have to undergo all sorts of troubles. (6) Give up negligence, forget the world and drink the beverage of Nam. (7) Serve Guru with awe and reverence. This is the secret Radhasoami has disclosed. (8)

(12)

Mind my words. Hear attentively what I say. It is for your own good. (1) You are tied to the world like a parrot caught in a trap. (2) Like a monkey, you are foolish enough to put yourself in the trap. (3) You are caught here like a fish which, for the sake of taste, gets its heart pierced.  (4) As a male elephant, seeing a supposititious  female elephant, puts himself in bondage, so are  you enticed in this world. (5) How long should  I go on repeating that cruel Kal has entrapped you  in various ways. (6) You are ignorant; you do not  know his stratagem and trickery. He has caught  you by fraud and force. (7) You do not take  recourse to the mode of escape. Then how can  you effect your release ? (8) Sant Sat Guru is your benefactor. But you do not care to associate with Him. (9) He is merciful. He will show you the way of release, and effect your- redemption. (10) He will cut asunder the ropes of five Tattwas and  three Gunas, which have kept you in bondage. (11)  Banishing all doubts and misgivings from your  mind, take to His company. You will then attain  a unique status. (12) Consider the allurements of  the world to be deceptions; you have become  friend with the foolish mind. (13) Shun its company every moment, otherwise it will cost you your life. (14) You will be thrown away from your home and jostled about in the cycle of births and deaths. (15) You will be reduced to a very sad plight. Who will take you out from there ? (16) Radhasoami therefore enjoins upon you to act upon this advice. (17)

 (13)

Why are you getting entangled in the world ? What will you gain by roaming about ? (1) Instil vigilance in your mind for your spiritual welfare and seek it in Satsang. (2) Fan the fire of virah (pangs of separation from the Beloved) and remove the impurity formed on account of worldly association. (3) Develop attachment for Sat Guru. You will get absorbed in Shabd. (4) You will be released from recurrent births and deaths and will find abode in the eternal region. (5) Your latent  bhag (spiritual fitness) will be awakened, you will attain Nam and repair to the Original Dham (Region) of the Supreme Being. (6) Kai has robbed the whole world and is leading all Jivas astray. (7) Nobody is afraid of the inevitable death, nor of the tortures at the hands of Jama. (8) All have been noosed by  moh (infatuation for the world).  Lobh (greed, avarice) has devoured all. (9) How can you be awakened within ? You do not seek the company of Guru. (10)  Kam (desire, passion) and  krodh (anger) lead Jivas to undignified and unbecoming activities. (11) There is none, except Guru, whom you may call your own and who can cut this net. (12) Kith and kin, friends and relatives are all self-seekers. They will not come near you, if you do not have money. (13) How far should I admonish the mind ? It allows these very persons to claw your flesh. (14) Guru and Sadh repeatedly warn you. But you do not trust them. (15) Radhasoami says that without grace and mercy nobody would listen. (16)

(14)

You are blessed with human form. Do something for your real good. (1) This world is unreal  like a dream. Do not let yourself be lost in it.  (2) Your body and dwelling are all transitory and  perishable. Why do you dissipate yourself in  delusions ? (3) Jivas are so much greedy that  they have forgotten their real form. None can  escape from Kal's clutches. (4) The fire of mundane desires has consumed the whole world. All are being roasted in it. (5) There is no way out. All are thrown in the fires of hell. (6) Day and night, they are being consumed; thereafter they  will be condemned to recurrent births and deaths.  (7) They will remain wandering from one species to another. They will not be at rest anywhere.  (8) The pain they suffer, cannot be described. (9)  Out of pity, Sant Sat Guru gives out the practice  of Sumiran of the Holy Name. (10) But Jivas  do not follow His path of Surat Shabd Yoga.  (11) Without Sat Guru and the practice of Surat  Shabd Yoga, they cannot get rid of transmigration.  (12) But how far am I to go on stressing this upon  them ? They do not listen to me. (13) They are all   man-mukhs (ego-centric, self-willed). They are subjected to pain, because they pay no attention  to Guru's precepts. (14) They do not serve Guru.  On the other hand, they like to be worshipped  themselves by others. (15) They do not take care of  their spiritual welfare. They will have to burn in  the fires of hell. (16) Radhasoami has given this special discourse. Try to understand its import, and act upon it. (17)

(15)

Conduct yourself cautiously and prudently in  the world. The path is crooked, strewn with  obstacles. Do not be swayed by the dictates of mind.  (1) The river of worldly existence is running very  deep. How can you get to the other side without the help of Guru ? (2) Love Guru as intensely as a lustful man loves his sweet-heart. (3) Associate with Guru. Think of Him all the time. Cling to His Feet sincerely. (4) Give up hypocrisy. Follow Guru's precepts. (5) Be always fearful of Kal. Death may come any moment. (6) 0 wanton mind ! Come to your senses and be vigilant with every breath of your life. Each and every wink utter the Name RADHASOAMI. (7) Negligence in this life will bring torments in the future. Then you will be unable to mend your mistakes. (8) Whatever 'you have to accomplish, accomplish it now. Do not rely on hereafter. (9) Desire not for the pleasures of the world and be not  affected by its sorrows. X10) Welcome the hour of  trouble and calamity, for then one comes to remember  and utter the Holy Name. (11) While in affluent  circumstances, one remains negligent, carried away  by the waves (thoughts and reveries) of the mind.  (12) Therefore, attend Satsang intently and you  will get across the rivers of pain and pleasure.  (13) Realize your true form within, and then  proceed further with your Surat. (14) Radhasoami  enjoins upon you to come in contact with Shabd Guru. (15)  3

(16)

O mind ! What for do you pride yourself ? This body of yours will mingle in dust and you will be thrown into the cycle of Chaurasi. (1) Avoid kam (lust) and krodh (anger) and cultivate humility and meekness. (2) Engender love and faith in Guru. Prepare elixir of Nam within yourself.  (3) Do not act upon the dictates of the uncouth  mind. Treasure Guru's precepts in your heart.  (4) The wanton mind does not take the saran  (protection and care) of Guru. Becoming more  and more greedy it gets surfeited. (5) Do not  follow the dictates of your mind otherwise you will  be lost in the world. (6) You have to deal with  this mind very carefully. Do not forget the Holy  Feet of Guru. (7) Fix the countenance of Guru in your eyes. Ascend to higher regions by means of Surat Shabd Yoga. (8) Perform Sumiran of RADHASOAMI, and keep in your mind whatever He says. (9)

(17)

How am I to get detached from the world ?  Moh (attachment) has tied me tightly. (1) I am being  put in stronger chains and tighter noose. (2) Nets are  now spread wide, and longing for the pleasures of the  world has increased. (3) Suffering will follow all this.  But nobody knows about it. (4) One day, you  will he overwhelmed by difficulties and suffer  pains of various kinds. (5) You will then repent. But at present, you are in no mood  to listen to my advice. You are wasting your  precious time. (6) You do not think of your death.  You are passing your days and nights in negligence.  (7) You act on the dictates of your mind. You are  day and night paying the toll of karams. (8) At night,  you stretch yourself and sleep in comfort without  imagining what may happen the next day (9) Kal  has subdued you by giving you a sound beating,  and karams have trampled you under feet. (10) Tamo-guna (darkness, ignorance, passion) has clouded your inner vision. You have lost memory  of your real home. (11) Sant Sat Guru is awakening  you, but you do not heed His words. (12) You do not  perform Bhajan and Sumiran, nor do you inculcate  love for His Holy Feet. (13) Imagine how you can escape from Jama's onslaughts. You are day and  night engrossed in pleasures and sorrows. (14)  Except Guru, who can redeem you ? You have  become a prisoner in many ways. (15) Without  Satsang and Nam, you can never get to your real  home. (16) Radhasoami has sung the praises of Satsang and Nam. Come under the saran (protection) of Sant Sat Guru. (17)

(18)

The perverse and vicious mind is after me. How can I get rid of it? (1) My mind never heeds Sat Guru's precepts, it rather shows indifference to Him. (2) By its intellect soiled with kam and krodh (anger and lust) it wants to test Guru. (3) It does not serve Him or engender faith in Him. On the contrary, it expects respect from Him. (4) It does not examine its own condition. Then, how can it find haven of peace ? (5) Day and night it wallows in lobh (greed and avarice) and moh (attachment and infatuation). (6) How can it properly understand the principles of Sant Mat when it puts forward its own reasoning ? (7) With such Jivas (persons), Sants prefer to keep mum. These Jivas are causing harm to themselves.  (8) They are slaves of perversity and vice. How to describe the state of their degradation ?  (9) Those, who are recipients of grace and mercy,  accept the saran of Sat Guru, and they alone  recognise Him. (10) Giving up all craft and cunningness, they should consider themselves to  be feeble and ignorant. (11) Then only will Sat  Guru be pleased to initiate them in the secrets  of Real Home. (12) He will free them from perversity and vice and attach their Surats to Shabd. (13) All Sants have declared that without Shabd, salvation of soul is impossible. (14) Radhasoami also says the same. He who accepts His words, is wise indeed. (15)

(19)

0 dear brother ! I now tell you about the measures to awaken this dormant mind. (1) 1 took  to pilgrimage, observed fasts and acquired learning and wisdom. (2) I performed japa and tapa, practised restraints of various kinds and observed silence. (3) 1 also took many other measures but this mind was not awakened. (4) Ultimately, after great search, was found the Sant Sat Guru, who gave out the following measures. (5) Attend Satsang, serve Sat Guru and surrender your body and mind to Him. (6) Ascend to Gagan and hear the Shabd of Sat Guru with rapt attention. (7) Slowly and gradually, the mind will be awakened. You will begin to realise that the whole world is perishable. (8) The Surat will get the help of the mind. Both will reach their respective destinations. (9) Whatever other methods may be tried, but, without Shabd, the mind cannot be awakened. (10) I have given out this method as the only right one for the correction of the mind. (11) It is a sheer waste of time to take recourse to other measures. They will not lead you home. (12) Without Sant, all are going astray. No body can find Shabd. (13) Again and again, I stress the importance of Shabd.  You should apply your Surat to Shabd. (14) You  will find abode in your real home. You will be  released from the cycle of recurrent births and deaths, (15) Radhasoami says that without the  saran of Sat Guru all have to wander in various  kinds of species. (7)

(20)

After wandering through crores of lives, you have now got this human form; it is a rare asset.  (1) Do not let it go waste. Take care. Apply  yourself to devotion every moment. (2) As regards  Bhakti (devotion), it must be of Guru. You should  (3) If  get initiation in Shabd Yoga from Him.  a guru does not know Surat Shabd Yoga, he is a  false guru. (4) Guru is He who is absorbed in Shabd. He does not perform any other practice. (5) I have disclosed the Shabds of Gagan (Trikuti), Sunn, Bhanwargupha, Sat Lok and Agam Lok. (6-7) I have explained fully how to recoginse a Guru. It leaves no doubt or ambiguity. (8) The perfect Guru is He who performs Surat Shabd Yoga. Become the dust of His Holy  Feet. (9) Do not apply other tests for recognising  Him. Look not for merits and demerits in Him.  (10) After getting initiated by Him in the mysteries  of Shabd, practise Surat Shabd Yoga wholeheartedly.  (11) Have some pity on your soul. Save it from  transmigration. (12) Otherwise, you will be subjected to all kinds of torments in hell, and burnt  in fire pits again and again. (13) Worldly pleasures  will last only for four days Thereafter you will  (14) Moved by your  undergo pain and suffering.  miserable plight, I caution you again and again.  (15) Awake and arise my dear. Guru will help  you. (16) Worship none but Guru. Have His darshan and attend on His Holy Feet. (17) Worship of Guru includes the worship of all, just as the ocean embraces all rivers. (18) If one worships Guru, undoubtedly one worships all gods and goddesses, Ishwar (God) and Mahesh (Shiva), Sun and Shesh (thousand headed serpent), Gaur (Shiva's wife) and Ganesh (Shiva's son), Brahm and par-Brahm, Satnam, the three worlds and the fourth Dham (Dayal Desh). (19-20-21) Hence I repeatedly applaud the Bhakti of Guru. (22) Become a gurumukh (devotee of Guru). Carry out His behests. One who has taken saran of  Guru gets across the ocean of life in a moment.  (23) How am Ito sing the praises of Guru ? There  is none equal to Him. (24) All religions have laid  down the worship of Guru. Those who are  antagonistic to Guru, will find no resting place  anywhere. (25) Worldly pleasures and enjoyments,  and power and position are secured by wealth or  through the kindness of rulers. (26) Do you not dance attendance on officials in order to obtain wealth, honour and position ? (27) You carry out their orders so meticulously that you neglect even your meal and sleep. (28) To what use do you put the wealth so amassed ? You squander it on securing name and fame in the world. (29) I have already emphasized that wealth and position last for four days only. (30) It is for this perishable wealth that you spend your life-time in serving and pleasing  the persons in high authority. What more should  I say about your efforts ? (31) But you neglect  the service of Guru, which would secure you help  and succour at all times and in all circumstances.  (32) It is really strange that days, fortnights, months  and years pass, and yet there is no yearning in your  heart for the darshan of Guru. (33) How can  you then hope for the salvation of your soul?  You have to abide in hell, suffering pain and  torments on all sides (34) Think over the matter.  Who will help you in that condition ? You do not  engender love for Guru. (35) If you do not believe in this, you should consider the matter from a different angle. (36) You are at all times, afflicted by diseases and sorrows. Know that they are the messengers of death. (37) Death is certain. It devours all the Jivas. (38) This death will come to you also. One day Kal will make an assault on you. (39 ! Take some measures to ward off that calamity. Wealth and position will not be of any help. (40) If you were wise, you would make good use of your riches by spending them in the service of the Spiritual Guide. (41-42) Guru does not care for your money. He holds the wealth of Bhakti and Nam. (43) But in order to do you good, He makes you spend your money on the poor and needy. (44) You secure His grace far nothing, if you win his pleasure. (45) It is really a great boon if Guru is pleased with you, for His pleasure means the pleasure of Sat Purush Himself. (46) Whosover secures the pleasure of Guru, is above all. (47) If Guru is pleased, the Creator is pleased. Kal and karam can do no harm. (48) The position of Guru is acknowledged by all. The  old sages, such as, Shuk Deo, Narad and Vyas,  have sung His praises. (49) You should, therefore,  win the pleasure of Guru. No other quarter can  bring you any good. (50) If Guru is pleased with  you, not the slightest injury or harm can be caused  to you, not a single hair of yours can be touched,  even though the whole world is displeased with you.  (51) He who pleases all others, but has enmity with  Guru, and speaks ill of Him, and takes Him to be  a human being, is obviously bringing his own ruin.  He shall be thrown into hell to suffer tortutes  there. (52-53-54) You should, therefore, try to see  things in their right perspective. Somehow or other  seek the pleasure of Guru. (55) Family and kinsmen cannot help you at all, nor can the people of your caste and community be of any help to you. (56) They keep you company for four days only. They are selfish to the core. (57) Do not be afraid of them. Apply yourself whole-heartedly to Guru Bhakti. (58) Guru will help you here and hereafter. Even the creator (Kal) is afraid of Him. (59) Family and kinsmen will do no good. In their company you will be hurled into  hell. (60) Associate with them only to the extent  it is necessary. If you are excessively attached to  them, you will have to suffer much. (61) Therefore,  attend Satsang, serve Sat Guru and remain absorbed  in Nam Padarath (bliss of Name). (62) Guru, Nam  and Satsang are the three means for attaining salvation. There are no other. (63) These three would accomplish your task. Karams would be exhausted and eradicated and you will secure admittance to the Original Home. (64) Accept these words, otherwise you will have to repent in the end. (65) Wealth and honour will do no good. Position and  authority will not last long. (66) Therefore, perform  Bhakti and make your life fruitful. (67)

(21)

O Sat Guru ! Now grant me the gift of Nam. Kal is tormenting me, and, with every breath, my life is shortening. (1) 1 suffer pain day and night. I have now come under Your saran. (2) There is no giver of gifts like You. I am a child, and You are my parent. (3) How can You see me in distress ? This is rather surprising to me. (4) 1 am a sinner, fallen and vicious. I commit mistakes of omissions and commissions every moment. (5) How far can I go on relating my faults ? I am unable to understand the mystery. (6) I know not Your exalted position and status. I describe it according to my feeble understanding. (7) You are omnipotent and omniscient. 0 Sat Guru Soami ! What else can I say ? (8) Ordain Your Mauj so that my troubles may end. Now cast a glance of daya (grace and mercy) on me. (9) I beg for  Nam (Name, Word) and not  Man (honour and reputation). Give me  Dan (gift) in any way you deem fit and proper. (10) 1 am a beggar, most depraved and hungry. I am devoid of love  and devotion. I am dry in every way. (11) I  have weighed and found myself unworthy. I wonder  how you will grant me the gift of precious Nam.  (12) Thus disappointed with my unworthiness, I  have no course but to have patience. But my  mind does not have patience at all. (13) Perhaps,  some time, grace may be vouchsafed to me. Then  of course, I may get a little particle of Nam. (14) Except grace, no remedy comes to my mind. If beneficence is granted, then something may occur to my mind. (15) Only a particle of Nam will accomplish my task. 0 Sat Guru ! My honour is in Your hands. (16) I have cried out enough. 0 Radhasoami ! Rescue me. Save me. (17)

(22)

Enjoy the bliss of Nam as a gift from Guru. Let  mind and Surat be drenched in the bliss of Shabd.  (1) Grasp the Holy Feet of Guru with your heart  and soul. Annihilate  man and  mad (pride and  ego). You will get peace. (2) Pay heed to the  words of Guru. Be on guard against the trickeries  of Maya. (3) The worldly people are being drowned  in the ocean of existence. Without  Nam, your  link with  Jame cannot be cut off. (4) Reverse the direction of spirit current within yourself day and night; moh (infatuation, attachment) will be vanquished. (5) Apply your Surat to Shabd. Ascend to Gagan and perceive it fully. (6) All distress and coufusion created by mind will be removed. Radhasoami Himself examines and makes others do so. (7)

(23)

O Surat ! Why are you misguided ? Now take  heed, and come to Soami. (1) 0 mind ! You have always been in companionship with me. Forsake the world. (2) 0 indriyas (senses) ! You are fond of pleasures. Why do you put yourselves  in the noose of Kal ? (3) Turn outward and downward tendencies and inclinations, and go inside;  you will see wonderful sports and pastimes. (4)  Make spiritual endevours as best as you can, with  reliance on the Holy Feet. (5) Rest assured Radhasoami is merciful to the humble. He will grant you abode in the unattainable region. (6) You will then live in your Original Home of bliss and happiness. You will not come back into this physical body. (7)

(24)

O Sakhi (friend) ! Why are you making delay ? Hurry up. Come to the gateway of the heavenly regions. (1) This city (body) is full of darkness, forgetfulness and delusion. (2) Seek the light inside. Leave the body of nine a p e r t u r e s.  (3) Ascend to Sahas-dal-kanwal, and, then, proceed  to Trikuti, Bhanwargupha and Sat Lok. (4) Go  beyond Alakh and Agam, and behold the refulgence  of the Holy Feet of Radhasoami. (5)

 (25)

Why are you still asleep in the world ? Wake  up. It is day-break. (1) The way-farers are on their way. But you have lost thought of your destination. (2) 0 my dear ! Seek Sat Guru, and proceed with Him majestically on the road to the Supreme Being. (3) The ocean of the worldly existence is very deep. No one can get across without the help and assistance of Guru. (4) 0 dear ! Listen to the mode of Bhakti (devotion). Engender love for the Holy Feet of Guru. (5) Give up doubts  and misgivings. Burn away traditional duties and  deeds. Then will your Surat be able to proceed  towards the Original Abode. (6) Sacrifice body  and mind, and ascend to Gagan Shikhar. Hear the  melodious bin (harp) in Sat Lok. (7) Then proceed  on and meet Alakh and Agam. Devote yourself for the Holy Feet of Radhasoami. (8)

(26)

0 my dear virtuous friend ! Cast off dreaming  of the world. (1) Find out Sat Guru at the earliest  and get initiated in the secrets of True Name. (2) Kith and kin, none will accompany you. Accumulation of wealth is a net. (3) Surat will go alone, getting separated from all. (4) This world is not  your home. Think of returning to your real Home.  (5) Now, engender love for Sat Guru, and surrender your body, mind and riches to Him. (6) Apply  your Surat to the Holy Feet. Turn aside pride,  attachment and desire. (7) Guru is omnipotent and  merciful to the humble. He will lovingly bestow  gifts upon you. (8) Your Surat will rise to higher regions. You will drink  ami-ras (nectar). (9) Detach yourself from body and mind, and go on singing the praises of Radhasoami, all day and night. (10)

(27)

Sat Guru has come to the world and is calling you; awake, my dear, awake. (1) The hunter Kal is standing on the way. R u n away, my dear, run away. (2) The Swarup (Form, Image) of Guru is within you. Peep inside, my dear, peep inside. (3) Give up pride and arrogance, and apply yourself to Guru's Feet, my  dear, apply yourself to Guru's Feet. (4) Give up  desire for the world and its pleasures, my dear, give up desire for the world. (5) The lotus eyes of Guru are the path to the Beloved. Gaze at  them, my dear, gaze at them. (6) Have firm faith  and reliance on Guru, my dear, have firm faith  and reliance on Guru. (7) Utter Radhasoami Radhasoami with your heart and soul, my  dear, utter Radhasoami Radhasoami every  moment. (8)

(28)

Darkness (of ignorance) is prevailing all the  world over. Adherence to rituals and observances  has gained the upper hand everywhere. (1) All Jivas are lost in delusion. Having acquired book knowledge, they pose as wise and clever. (2) They are engaged in false worship (idol worship). They have lost memory of their Nij Ghar (Real Home). (3) Nij Pad (Original Abode) is Radhasoami Dham. Sat Purush resides in Sat .Lok. (4) When Sants visit this world, they give out these  secrets. But the Jivas, given to rituals and observances, do not believe Their words. (5) Neither Brahm nor Maya, neither Vedas nor Purans, neither five elements nor three qualities, neither mind nor desire, nor three kinds of bodies were in existence at all. The Supreme, Omnipotent, Indescribable,  Infinite and Nameless Being Radhasoami alone  then existed. (6-8) There arose Mauj (Wave) and  brought forth the great and beautiful creations of  Agam Lok, Alakh Lok and Sat Lok. (9) In Agam  Lok Radhasoami became Agam Purush and in Sat  Lok, Sat Purush. (10) Two  anshas emanated from here. They are known as Brahm and Maya. (11) These two anshas (emanations) came down and mingled with the five elements and three qualities. (12) With the permission of Sat Purush, they created the three worlds- (13) The Jiva-ansh or the Surat (spirit entity) came from Sat Lok. Maya and Brahm had begged for it from Sat Purush.  (14) Surats or Jivas were tied down to the body,  mind and senses, and were entangled in the desires  for pleasures. (15) They became forgetful of the  Supreme Being. They were led astray in rituals  and observances. (16) All Jivas are thus roaming  about in the cycle of eightyfour. Jyoti and  Niranjan have put noose round their necks. (17)  He who ' accepts the teachings of Sants, will cut the  noose and repair to his Real Home. (18) Perform  the practice of Surat Shabd Yoga. Then can you  hope to attain Sat Lok. (19) Attend Satsang, and  engender love and faith in the Holy Feet of Sants.  (20) Perform Dhyan (contemplation) of Sat Guru  and Sumiran of RADHASOAMI Nam. (21) Your mind and Surat will then attain purification and  proceed on from one Shabd to another. (22) You  will thus go on ascending and ultimately reach the  abode of Sat Guru. You will then be free from  Kai and karam. (23)  Mana (mind) and   Maya will be left below. They will not go  beyond the three worlds. (24) Pralaya (Dissolution)  and Maha Pralaya (Great Dissolution) and Kai and  and Maha Kal have no access there. (25) Sat Lok is  a wonderful region. Surat attains the status of a  Hansa there. (26) Surat is absorbed in the  ecstatic bliss of darshan of Sat Purush. It feeds  upon  ami (ambrosia), inhales fragrance of  sandal wood and hears resoundings of Shabd. (27)  Experiencing these joys and pleasures, Surat proceeds  on and finds abode in the Nij Pad (Original Home).  (28)  Nij Pad is Radhasoami. I bow down  before His Holy Feet again and again. (29) How can  I praise my good luck ! How can I sing the praises  of Radhasoami. (30) This Arti is now complete. I  ever remain slave to the Holy Feet of Radhasoami.  (31)

(29)

No one knows the power and wisdom of my merciful Guru. To whom may I disclose this  truth? No one is ready to accept it. (1) The  whole world is full of darkness and the tumultuous  uproar of Maya. Kal and Karam are exerting  themselves to their full force in beguiling Jivas. (2)  Jivas are entangled in pilgrimage and fasting, and  idol worship in temples. They search for Him in  books, but no one gets His secrets and mysteries.  (3) Some observe silence. Some engage in  japa  (muttering prayers). Some mortify themselves by  standing amidst five fires. Some are busy in  recitation, fire-worship and sacrificial ceremony.  Some lecture on Brahm-gyan. (4) Some sing songs  of gods and goddesses. Some meditate on Ram  and Krishna. Some propitiate ghosts, goblins  and spirits. Some take bath in the Ganga  and the Jamuna. (5) Some advocate almsgiving. Some feed the Brahmans (people of the priestly class) and Bhekhs (anchorites). Some recite sacred hymns to others. Some are engaged in  contemplation. (6) All these acts and practices  of the old times are the snares of Kal and karam.  Jivas immersed in them are in helpless condition  and are in delusions. (7) If you are keen about  your salvation, seek the true Guru. Engender love  and faith and take saran of His Holy Feet. (8)  Adopt the Holy Name RADHASOAMI. Enshrine the image of Guru in your heart. Get initiated  in Surat Shabd Yoga. Sing the praises of Guru  all day and night. (9) Attend Satsang carefully.  Engender love for Guru in your heart. You will  be able to subdue Kai and mind, and to apply  your Surat to Shabd. (10) Showering His grace  and mercy, and. vouchsafing protection to you  every moment, Guru sets your mind right. it then  rushes to Gagan (sky, heaven). (11) Behold Jyoti (flame) in Nabh (Sahas-dal-kanwal), touch Guru's  feet in Trikuti, hear the melodious violin in Sunn  and bathe in the Tribeni. (12) From there let your  Surat proceed on and hear the sounds of Sohang  and flute. Reach the Holy Feet of Sat Purush and  hear Sar Shabd. (13) Prepare the platter of mind  and the wick of Surat, and light the flame of Shabd.  Sing the Arti (hymn) with love. (14) Adorn yourself with the garments of strong love. Prepare  Bhog (victuals) of love and devotion. Obey the  behests of the beloved Sat Guru and thus gain  His pleasure. (15) Rush to Alakh and Agam.  Get to the Home which is the beginning and end  of all. Merge in the Holy Feet of Radhasoami.  (16) Sing  This is the Highest Region of Sants.  the praises of Guru who has enabled you to receive  the grace and mercy of Radhasoami and attain Nij  Desh (Original Region).. You will then praise your  good luck. (17)

(30)

It is the month of Sawan[1], dark clouds have  gathered all around and Shabds are roaring like  thunder. (1) As the rain pours, pangs of separation  (from the Lord) pierce my heart like a dagger. (2)  My Lord abides in some far off region. This much  I understand though there is no message from Him  or clue to His whereabouts. (3) All day and night, I  feel extremely distressed. My breast throbs with anguish. (4) In whom may I confide ? None understands  my suffering. Nothing consoles me, for, without  the darshan of my Beloved Lord, all is dark to me.  (5) As lightning flashes, I am overtaken with  intense yearning for my Lord. Oh ! How may I  meet the Lord, the support of my life ! (6) Thus  all day and night I weep and wail. Paroxysms of  pain arise in my heart all the time. (7) I wandered  from place to place in search of my Beloved Lord.  Then I heard the voice of Radhasoami. (8) He  (Guru) gave me message of the Beloved Lord. He  exhorted me to proceed to His region by catching hold of Shabd. (9) He showed me the path of Surat Shabd Yoga. He elevated my mind and Surat.  (10) By attending Satsang, my inner eye was  opened. I heard the discourses of the Beloved Guru  in Satsang. (11) When, by His grace and mercy,  recognition dawned upon me, I discovered that my  Beloved Lord Himself has incarnated as Guru. (12)  He, in His grace, takes me in His lap, and removes  all my troubles and miseries. (13) How may I sing  the praises of Radhasoami ! I dedicate my body  and mind to Him. (14) I am fortunate that I  behold the Holy Feet of Guru. I now express my devout gratitude and thankfulness to my Beloved Lord, Radhasoami. (15)

(31)

I will play Holi with Sat Guru. I will apply 1 will my mind and Surat to His Holy Feet. (1) burn the net of karams and throw away the dust of delusions. (2) I will throw the gulal (red powder) of the three gunas (qualities) and pour forth the colour of Shabd. (3) 1 am intoxicated in Prem (love). I remain absorbed in the bliss of the Holy  Feet of Guru. (4) 1 convey the message of my Guru to the humanity with full throated ease. (5) I exhort the people of the world to take the saran of  Radhasoami and sing His praises, (6) I announce  that Radhasoami saves Jivas from Kal by imparting the secrets of Nam to them. (7)

(32)

0 Guru ! I am enamoured of Thy darshan. I  have become disgusted and fed up with my mind.  I sacrifice my Surat at Thy Holy Feet. (1) 0 my  Beloved ! One glance of Thine has rendered me  desparately restless like Majnun[2] in love. with Laila.  (2) I am sick at heart. There is no remedy except  Thy darshan. Thy voice alone will work like  soothing balm on my lacerated heart. (3) The  lustre of Thy face has illumined my heart. Thousands of suns and moons feel ashamed before Thy  radiance. (4) A lover gives publicity to his love  by falling at the feet of the beloved. Such has  been the practice with lovers in this world. (5)  All worldly thoughts and desires have departed from  my heart. I am filled with intense longing for Thy  darshan. (6) Indeed ! My fortune has brightened,  for my Surat has united with Guru's Feet. It has  penetrated the moon sphere, and effected ingress  into Gagan. (7) 1 withdrew inwards, and heard sweet celestial music. Both Hindus and Mohammedans appear to me heretical. (8)

(33)

On arriving at the Arsh (sky, heavens, Sahas-dal-kanwal), I saw light. I killed Kal and blew the  trumpet. (1) When my Surat began to rise up,  I became clean oblivious to my physical body. I  returned to my original seat. (2) Now I take out  of the crowd those who are lovers of the Beloved's  lane. (3) Hearken what I say. Withdraw your  spirit current and listen to the sound coming from  above. (4) There are flower gardens and Satsang  within your head. Proceed on, you will imbibe the  colour of Guru. (5) Withdraw the spirit current  from the pupils and do not open your eyes. Ascend  up and open the door of Akash (sky, heavens). (6)  When your Surat penetrates on, you will see the mystery of human microcosm and enjoy the bloom  of spring within. (7) There are wonderful spectacles within you; there the earth is above and the  sky is below. (8) Passing through Banknal (the  crooked tunnel), my Surat marched on to Trikuti,  and met Guru. (9) What should I say about the  red morning sun of Trikuti ? Each ray (or each  hair of the Deity of the region) has the light of  thousand suns. (10) Thence my Surat went to Sunn and heard the melodious kingri and sarangi (fiddle and violin). (11) Pools of amrit (nectar) are visible on all sides. The denizens, called Hansas, pick up and feed upon pearls. (12) Leaving Sunn, I went onwards to Maha-sunn, on way to Sohang. (13) What should I say about that region ? He alone knows it, who has access there. (14) The whole passage is enveloped in darkness. It can be crossed only in the company of Sat Guru. (15) When I crossed the vast expanse of Maha-sunn in the company of Sat Guru, Kai, was stunned and puzzled. (16) I  ascended to Bhanwargupha and heard the sound of  Sohang. (17) Having witnessed the glory of this  marvellous region, I opened the window and proceeded further. (18) I arrived in Sat Lok and received  the feed of amrit (ambrosia). (19) Above that, are  the regions of Alakh and Agam, and beyond them is Radhasoami Nam. This region is Akah, Apar  and Anam (indescribable, infinite and nameless).  Except Sants, who can secure access to this  Dham ? This is the final and ultimate stage. All  speech and description end here. I also follow  suit. (20-22)

(34)

Love for the Nij Roop (Real Form) of Sat Guru is welling up in my heart. I am bathing in the nectar of His discourses. (1) The moment I came in His saran and placed the dust of His Feet on my head, all darkness and impurities of my mind disappeared. (2) His lovely face, stately figure, graceful gait and majestic refulgence are piercing my heart deep. (3) When 1 attended His  Satsang, and heard His discourse, the world and  religion both (that is, the notion of life here and  hereafter, of happiness in this world and the next),  appeared to be false and flimsy. I do not care for  them. (4) The hidden mysteries of the human  microcosm unfolded themselves to me. By the grace and kindness of the perfect Guru, my task is  being accomplished. (5) When my Surat caught  hold of Dhun (sound), it at once ascended to Asman  (sky, heavens). It became fit to remain there. All  sorrows and griefs were annihilated. (6) It went  along the sound. On reaching Nabha, it got  acquainted with the secrets. It saw the marvellous  and novel bloom of spring. Intuition dawned upon  it and it was thrilled. (7-8) Pain and suffering of  recurrent births and deaths and all troubles and  difficulties ended here. (9) No sooner had I posed a  question to Sat Guru than all inner secrets and  mysteries were revealed to me. (10) 1 quitted the body made of dust; Kal also admitted defeat, and kept away from me. (11) As soon as I ascended to Akash (sky, heavens), all karams and activities came to an end. My Surat became creator. (12) When my Sat Guru became gracious, I went to and  met him in Nij Dham, and fact r viyog (separation)  ended for good. (13) Observers of rituals, followers  of laws and codes of conduct laid down in religious  books, and those engaged in prayers, know nothing.  Those alone who perform spiritual practices, know  the secrets and mysteries. (14) People imbued with  worldly learning are foolish and ignorant. They know nothing of the inner secrets. (15) The whole world is labouring under illusions and delusions.  They are bachaks (soophists, mere talkers) and do  not take the Saran of the perfect Guru. (16) Those  alone are fortunate who have come in contact with  Sat Guru. All the rest will remain entangled in  talks and discussions. (17) Sat Guru Radhasoami  Dayal has showered grace and mercy upon me.  I am now destined to go to the Highest Region. (18)

(35)

0 my munificent Guru ! this beggar is standing  at Your door. (1) I have been supplicating for  long. Please cast a benign look at me. (2) Grant  me the gift of Bhakti. Kal has tormented me  much. (3) My heart is longing for Your darshan.  (4) Let showers of Prem fall from the clouds of (5) So that my Your limitless grace and mercy.  Surat be drenched in the current of nectar, and my  body and mind feel elated. (6) Thus may my life be  fruitful and I may ever sing Your praises. (7) I am low, unworthy and worthless. But I am lying at Your door. (8) Give ear to my supplication. Be gracious upon me. (9) My Father, Radhasoami, soon rowed me across (10)

(36)

0 my beloved and elegant Sat Guru ! Dye  the sheet of my Surat with Your love. (1) You are  an infinite and unfathomable ocean of love. Make  me intoxicated in your love. (2) You are full of  Preen (love). Please shower the colour of love. on  me and fill the pitcher of my heart with it (3) Heart-ravishing is your Nij Rup (Real Form). Let it be reflected in the mirror of my heart. (4) Save  me from Mana and Maya (mind and  matter) and grant me abode in the Highest  Region which is free from death and decay. (5)  It is long time since I have been crying. Fulfil my  longing and yearning. (6) Kai and karam have been  beguiling me. Capture the five thieves. (7) In  whichever direction I turn, Kai is there to beguile  me. Therefore, 0 my Sat Guru ! fix my heart and  mind firmly in Your Holy Feet. (8) You are Giver  of all gifts. Why so much delay ? Now, hurry up  to answer my prayer. (9) I am unable to put my  prayer properly. Graciously grant me what I wish.  (10) 0 my beloved Radhasoami ! Grant me the  boon of ever remaining in your company. (11)

(37)

O Radhasoami ! Hear my prayer. Enhance my love. (1) Grant me the gift of firm faith in Your Holy Feet. Graciously accept me as Your own. (2) I am not able to perform Bhajan and Bhakti. I am carried away by greed and infatuation. (3) My efforts are of no avail. Pride and jealousy vex me daily. (4) This vicious mind always keeps me in delusion. It does not let me pick up right understanding. (5) One moment it is dry, the other moment it is flat. It is lost in forgetfulness by the allurements of Maya. (6) I try my best to awaken it, but it does not respond. It does not know the benefits of Prem and Bhakti. (7) It is always slack and lazy in performing sewa (service). It again and again succumbs to  bhog (pleasure) and  rog (diseases). (8) It is always whirling about in superstitions. It pays no heed to the discourses delivered in Satsang. (9) It is under the sway of base sentiments. Who can set it right except Guru? (10) Therefore, I again and again pray : O Radhasoami ! Extend your helping hand to me. (11) 1 am meek and humble, beseeching at Your door. Who can improve me except Yon ?  (12) I am like a crow of ship. There is no place  of rest and peace except Your Holy Feet. (13)  I  know of no other support or prop. I day and night  sing Radhasoami Radhasoami. (14) The protection  of my honour is now a concern of Yours. I have  become a slave of Your Holy Feet. (15) 0 merciful Radhasoami ! You are my husband and father. Enrich me by Your grace and  mercy. (16)

(38)

Again and again I pray to Radhasoami. 0  Giver of gifts ! Have mercy upon me. May my  mind apply itself to Your Holy Feet. (1) For lives together, I have been in delusion. I did not  get your whereabouts. I have been undergoing  untold suffering in the snares of Kai and karam.  (2) The worldly people remain wandering in the  four classes of life on this earth. Gyanis and  Yogis are being pressed in the oil press of the mind.  (3) My adi-bhag [3] is awakaned when I meet Sat  Guru, who gives out the secrets and mysteries of  Radhasoami Dham. (4) That Dham is the highest of all and does not rest on any support. Without  the grace and mercy of a Sant, no one can get the  secrets of Surat Shabd Yoga. (5) Sat Guru has  explained to me the glory and eminence of  RADHASOAMI Nam. I will now get to the  Original Home by awakening longing and yearning.  (6) 1 associate with Sadh and enjoy the bliss of  Shabd to my heart's content. I have developed  intense love for the Holy Feet. I yearn for His  darshan. (7) I am restless for repairing to the  Abode of the Beloved. I daily have darshan of  Sat Guru and thus make my mind patient and  steady. (8) May my Surat soar higher and higher  enjoying the bliss of the Shabds and beholding the  spectacles of celestial regions on the path and, in  the end, may get rest and repose in Nij Ghar  (Original Home). (9) This is the fondest wish I  cherish in my heart. Until its fulfilment I will ever  remain sad and dejected. 0 Lord ! hear my  supplication. Grant me abode in Your Holy Feet.  (10) There is none so powerful from whom f may  beg for any gift. 0 Lord ! Let showers of Prem  (love) fall upon me. Open the treasure-house of  amrit (nectar). (11) 0 my all-powerful Soami ! You are merciful to the humble. Grant me Your days (grace and mercy). May I ever sing songs of thankfulness and recite RADHASOAMI ! (12).

(39)

How can I pray at the Holy Feet ? I am full  of countless faults and blemishes. (1) I am very  negligent. I do not bear in mind the words of Guru  (2) I am dyed in the colour of Maya. I am given to  pleasures of mind and senses. (3) 1 am puffed up with  health, wealth and success. I am away from the path  leading to the Holy Feet of Guru. (4) Thus my  whole life has been wasted in delusion. I am  wandering in the wilderness of the world. (5) The  recollection of the abode of Sat Guru never comes  to me. I am subservient to Maya. (6) I am being  carried away by pride, arrogance and infatuation. I  am running with lust, desire and anger. (7) I am  drifting in the waves of greed and avarice. I suffer  in the company of worldly Jivas. (8) I do not know  the mode of Bhakti (devotion). I do not accept the  advice of Sat Guru. (9) He graciously gives out  the secrets and mysteries of higher regions. He  delivers discourses in Satsang every day. (10) But  this shameless mind does not awaken. It is wasting  itself in deceptions and delusions. (11) It has no fear and faith in Guru. It desires honour and pleasures. (12) What should I do ? I am helpless. How can I cut the snares of mind ? (13) My Guru  Radhasoami is merciful. He will remove the shadow  (influence) of mind. (14) He will save me by granting  the protection of His Holy Feet. He will make  me His own. (15) Except Radhasoami, there is none who can release me from Jama (Kal). (16) Again and again I pray to Him. I know none except  Radhasoami. (17) 0 Father ! shower Your grace  upon me. Make me dust of Your Holy Feet. (18)  Help me in giving up the desires for pleasures of  mind and senses so that I may hold Your Holy  Feet in all sincerity. (19) Cast away the evils of my  body and mind You are munificent. Make no  delay. (20) I have suffered much. I feel dejected.  (21) How far can I go on relating my pitiable plight ! 0 Radhasoami ! Help me. (22) Attract my mind and Surat to Your Holy Feet. This time, You graciously take me across. (23) 1 have committed many a sin. Pardon me, and effect my salvation. (24) Take not my faults into account. Be kind to emancipate me. (25) 0 Radhasoami, my merciful Father; bless me with Your darshan. (26) 1 wish I may be detached from body and mind, and apply  myself to Your Holy Feet. (27) Enhance my love.  Show me Your Nij Roop (Real Form). (28) Then  will my life be fruitful. I am a slave at the door of  Radhasoami. (29) Let the rain of Prem (love) fall within, so that my mind and Surat be drenched in  the benign colour of Guru. (30) I am low, ignorant  and green-horn. But I have taken shelter at Your  Holy Feet. (31) Hear my cry of prayer. Now be  kind upon me. (32) 0 Radhasoami ! You are  supremely munificent. Send your unbounded grace  and mercy to my rescue. (33) This Jiva is feeble  and ignorant. He does not consider Guru to be his  protector. (34) 0 Radhasoami ! keeping in view Your own high and exalted position, ferry me across the ocean of worldly existence. (35)

(40)

I am eager to play Holi. 0 beloved Soami ! throw open the door. (1) Let the colour of Prem (love) be showered on me and my Surat be drenched in it. (2) There has already been much delay. How long should I call and pray ? (3) 1 am tossing and rolling about restlessly. Please grant me Your darshan. (4) May my `ghat' (inner being) be illumined by the wondrous splendour of Your elegant countenance. (5) The month of Phagun has ushered in. New songs of Phag (or Holi) are being sung and the spring is blooming. (6) 0 Supremely Merciful Radhasoami ! Let me adhere to Your Holy Feet. (7) I supplicate with folded hands that You make me Prem Duldri (fondled and loved). (8)

(41)

This loving devotee, full of mirth, plays Holi  with Sat Guru (1) She throws abir and gulal [4]and  sprinkles colour on all sides. (2) When she discharges a syringe of five elements, three gunas  (qualities) feel distressed. (3) She teases mind and  senses, and puts up a fight against Kal. (4) She  engenders in her heart love for Sat Guru. She  conforms to the mode of conduct prescribed by  Guru. (5) In His grace and mercy, Guru has  enabled her to cling to His Holy Feet. Every  part of her body has expanded with joy. (6) She enthusiastically sings the praises of Radhasoami all day and night. (7)

(42)

My Surat today takes part in the sports of  Holi. Enshrining Shabd Rup (Shabd Form of  Guru) in my heart, I am imbued with the  love for Guru. (1) Catching hold of the rope of  Dhun, my Surat rises up. I have cast off all  pride and jealousy. (2) The Bachans (discourses) of Radhasoami are very dear to me. I apply myself to the Holy Feet. (3) Playing Holi, I reach the Guru Pad (Trikuti) where red powder is being sprinkled. (4) 1 ascend to Sunn Shikhar and Bhanwargupha. In Sat Lok, I obtain the benediction of Sat Nam. (5) 1 am overjoyed to meet the Hansas. I go beyond Alakh and Agam. (6) Radhasoami Dayal has showered His special grace and mercy and bestowed on me the gift of Prem (love). (7)

(43)

With love for the Holy Feet of Guru in my heart, my Surat has come to play Phag (Holi). (1) 1 have filled the syringes with the colour of Prem (love) and discharge them on all sides with great frolicsomeness. (2) I fill the  qumquma [5] with  abir and  gulal (red powder) of Surat and throw it on the Holy Feet of Guru. (3) I throw away the dust of kam and krodh (passion and anger). I remove karam and bharam (entanglements and delusions). (4) I abuse Kal and turn him away. With the grace of Guru, I cut asunder the net of Maya. (5) My Surat ascends to Gagan (Trikuti) and exhibits there love and tenderness for the Holy Feet of Guru. (6) I meet Sat Guru in Sat Lok, and then in Alakh and Agam. (7) In Radhasoami Dham, I caress the Holy Feet of Radhasoami, and receive the gift of Prem (Love). (8)

 KABIR SAHEB'S SHABDS

(1)

0 mind ! Why are you lost in this world?  Where have you banished your good sense ? (1)  The birds rest at night on some tree and fly away  in different directions at day-break. During  dream you consider yourself a monarch, but no  sooner you wake up than all pomp and show, army  and camp followers vanish. (2-3) In this world  mother and father, brother and sister, son and wife, are not yours. Everybody has an eye on his own interests. All  worldly honour and praise is deceptive. (4) Kabir says, "Innumerable waves arise from and merge in the sea. Likewise the mind gives rise to countless desires." (5)

(2)

How sad ! my mind does not pay heed to advice. I  try to impress upon it again and again that the life in this world is short. (l) Don't be proud of the body. It matters little whether it is dark or fair. (2) Without devotion it is useless, even if one uses  crores of scents and cosmetics. (3) Don't get lost  seeing Maya, elephants or horses. People got  entangled in the world amassing wealth in lakhs  and crores. (4-5) 0 foolish mind ! you have  wasted life in evil thoughts and cunningness. Even  now attend Satsang and seek Satguru's favour.  (6-7) When you fall into Maya, it is Sat Guru who  raises you, just as one takes a child into one's lap.  Kabir says that you should let your attention be  with the Gracious Feet, the way thread is with a,  needle. (8-9)

(3)

This world is so crazy that it does not care to  know about true love and devotion. (1) Some come to beg for a son. Some grief-stricken ask  for mercy. (2-3) Some come to ask for wealth,  offering money for the fulfilment of their desire.  (4) Some come for marriage. But the worldly  gurus are pleased with this very sort of devotion.  (5) The whole world is after unreality. None  asks for Truth. (6) Kabir asks, "What to make of  such blind people ? (7)

(4)

O ye fools ! you have bungled your human life.  You came in this world to augment the store of  your spirituality but you have lost your capital. (1)  You have forgotten all the vows you made  while in the womb. You have lost your sense on  seeing Maya and beautiful wife. (2-3) All the big traders have gone ahead, whereas you, petty dealer, have loaded  alkaline salt leaving   cloves and  betel nuts. (4-5) You are wandering in pilgrimages and fasts without thinking  about the Prime Truth. You worship various  gods instead of the Supreme Being. You will  have to suffer a lot in the end. (6-7) Kabir asks  what you have brought and what load of karams you are taking away. You are leaving the world like a gambler who has lost everything. (8-9)

(5)

What shall I beg of the Supreme Being ? Nothing is permanent in this world. Everything is passing away before my eyes. (1) Ravan, the king of Lanka, had one lakh sons and one and a  quarter lakhs of grand-sons, but not a single one  remained after him to kindle a light in the  house. (2) That king Ravan, who had such a  strong fort like Lanka, protected by a deep moat  of sea, came to an end without leaving a sign. (3)  Many having mansions of gold with silver balconies  had to leave everything and go empty-handed. (4)  In fact, one may erect huge mansions or small  huts, one day when death comes, the soul will fly  away leaving behind the dead body. (5) Kabir  says that there is no companion either when one  comes or when one goes. So what is the use  of having a herd of elephants. This jiva has  to depart in the end just like a gambler with empty  hands. (6-7)

 (6)

I know you will pass away, 0 mind ! I know this well. When a wave of greed comes, you will be drowned in it. (1) Kings and their beautiful queens will go, scholars versed in Vedas and those reciting mythological stories will also go. (2) Kabir says that even Yogis, wandering mendicants, meditators and ascetics will go. Only the true devotees whose faith is stable, will remain. (3)

(7)

Quaff the cup of nectar of Nam and become  blissful. You have wasted your childhood in  playing and your manhood after a woman. Now  when old a g e has come, cold, cough and gastric diseases have overpowered you.  You can't even move; you are bed-ridden. (1-2)  Though musk is in navel, the deer searches it  in the forest, similarly reservoir of happiness  is within you, but you seek it outside. (3) Because  you have not come in contact with the True Physician, you have to undergo so much suffering. (4)  Mother, father, brother, wife and son, none can  accompany you in the end. So you should go on  singing the praises of Guru as long as you live, for  this health and wealth will last only for ten days.  (5-6) Kabir Saheb says, "If you want to get out  of the cycle of Chaurasi, you should give up the  lust for woman, because she is full of poison  (evil)". (7-8)

(8)

Fie upon the cleverness of this world. Man  lever remembers the Lord's Name, who has given  him the secrets. (1) People amass money for enjoying  themselves and their progeny. But thieves take  away most of it and the remaining is taken away by sons-in-law. (2-3) Maya is like a vendor of  spirituous liquors, who keeps people intoxicated,  some lie in dust while others ask for better quality.  Maya has cheated gods, human beings and sages;  and has swallowed spiritual teachers, prophets and  apostles. (4, 5 & 6) Some rare persons who ran  away from the world and joined Satsang were saved;  for them Maya felt sorry and repentant. Kabir says, "Maya came to me and tried to put noose  around my neck, but by the grace of Guru and  association of Sadhs, I was saved, and became  fearless. (7, 8, & 9)

(9)

None who takes birth is happy; here everyone  is unhappy, I say this after examining fully the lives of Jivas from beginning to end. (1) Whether  one is a house-holder or a recluse, one is affected by gain or loss. For fear of suffering sage Sukdev  renounced Maya even while in the womb. (2) Yogis  and wandering mendicants all are unhappy. Those engaged in the practice of rigorous penance are doubly unhappy. In fact no one is saved as desires  and hankerings haunt everyone. (3) If I speak the  truth, no one believes it and I cannot tell a lie. It fact even Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar, who  promulgated the path of Yoga and penance, are  unhappy. (4) Kabir says. "An ascetic and a king  both are unhappy. A pauper is unhappy because  of adversity. The whole world is unhappy  except Sants, because they have control over the  mind. (5)

(10)

0 Sadh ! make your life worthwhile, why  spoil it under illusion. You are not going to have such an opportunity again. Do not gamble away  your human life. (1) Do not waste your precious  time in playing with dolls. Apply yourself to the  attainment of Reality. So long as you are no, initiated in the secrets of the inner self and the  internal path, you cannot achieve anything. (2) Do  not get lost in pilgrimages, fasts, muttering prayers  and penances. If you do not pay heed to this  advice, you will find yourself entangled in the net  of Karams and will be wandering in the cycle of  births and deaths for ages. (3) It is all worthless,  bathing, washing, dangling bells, performing the  practices of Hath Yoga such as Neti and Dhoti or  singing and dancing. No useful result can be  obtained by these. (4) Kabir says that if you want  salvation, pay heed to my words that the Supreme  Being cannot be met by blowing a horn, wearing a  necklace, rubbing ashes, carrying idols, wearing an  appearance of an ascetic, etc. (5)

If the heart is devoid of `Nam', none of the outer activities would do any good: as for instance  putting on garlands round the neck, carrying a  rosary in the hand, reading religious treatises,  blowing conch, living in Kashi, drinking Ganges  water, keeping fasts and putting marks on foreheads.  (1, 2, 3, 4) Kabir says, "Listen, 0 Sadh ! all such  jivas will go to hell." (5)

(12)

O Sadh ! the whole world has gone mad. No  one realises the importance of Guru. Hindus  profess that God is Ram while Muslims say that  Rahman is their God. Both fight with each other  and always remain in a fix. (1) I came across many  rigid followers who daily take bath early in the  morning, and worship stone-idols instead of loving  Guru. The knowledge of such people is superficial.  (2) There are those who are called Pirs and  Aulias, They read Koran, and instruct their  followers to worship at the graves. In fact they  are also unaware of God. (3) Pity and compassion have vanished from both the Hindus  and the Mohammedans as they sacrifice animals.  The Hindus slaughter the animals by having their necks cut by a sudden jerk, while the Mohammedans slaughter them by cutting their throats. Both are doomed. (4) Kabir says that they laugh at him and consider themselves wise. But consider who is more whimsical of the two ? (5)

(13)

O Sadh ! Brahmans are really butchers. They  have no pity in their hearts. They kill goats and  sheep. (1) They bathe, put marks on their foreheads and engage in the worship of gods and goddesses with a show of great propriety. But a moment later, they kill a living being and cause a stream of blood. (2-3) These very persons are considered of high caste and very pious. They receive great respect in public. I cannot but laugh when I find that everybody wants to be initiated by these very persons. (4-5) They tell religious stories to eradicate sins of the listeners, but they make them indulge in mean acts. I see both of them getting drowned together. In the end Jam will drag them both into hell. (6-7) They call them Muslims who kill cows, but are they (the Brahmans) better in any respect ? Kabir says, "The Brahmans of Kali Yuga are wretched and mean." (8-9)

(14)

My parental home (region of Kal and Maya)  is not pleasing to me. The abode of my beloved Lord is supremely lovely and charming. Once one goes there, one does not like to return. There are  neither sun and moon nor air and water. Who can  convey the state of my yearning and love to my  Beloved ? (1) If I move forward, I do not find the way.  If I step back, it is a matter of shame for me. 0 my  friend ! Tell me how can I proceed to my Beloved's  abode. My longing is getting more and more  intense, but sensual pleasures area great hindrance in  the path. (2) Kabir says, "Except Sat Guru there is  none who can show me the way. I don't even  meet my Beloved in dream. How can the distress of my heart be relieved ? (3)

(15)

Keep the swing of love in motion. Put up the  rope of love on the poles of arms for swinging  the Beloved. (1) Wearing saffron-coloured clothes, withdraw inwards in the Nij Ghat where  you will meet the beloved Lord. Make him  pleased with you. (2) Let your heart be overcast  with clouds. Bring the downpour of rain in your  eyes. Sing the songs of love and yearning, while traversing on the path of Surat. Kabir says, "0 Sadh ! listen, in this way let your mind be imbued with the thought of the Beloved. (3-4-5)

(16)

O Sakhi (friend) ! make efforts to meet the Lord. Now stop playing with toys and dolls and  winnowing baskets. Give up childishness. (1)  Worship of gods, goddesses, ancestors, etc., will  lead you to the cycle of eightyfour (transmigration).  (2) The mansion of the Lord is very high and of  exquisite colours. His bed is made of flowers. (3)  Surrender your body and mind. Take care of your  Surat, and fall at the Holy Feet of the Lord. Kabir  says, "Shed all fear, 0 Hans (celestial being), I shall  let you know the key to open the lock." (4-5)

(17)

There is no other giver than Guru in the  whole of Brahmand. The whole world is beggar  before Him. (1) The sinful go on pilgrimage. Is  pilgrimage going to confer salvation on them? What is the use of washing the body if passion,  anger and pride are not washed off ? (2) 0 fool !  without knowing the secrets of Shabd, you labour  in vain, like one who makes a boat of paper and  places heavy iron in it. (3) The inner-self becomes  illumined on meeting the Beloved. All Sants have  said that only Sat Guru can help you cross the  ocean of existence. (4) What can you hope to gain  by worshipping stone-idols ? By inviting a Sadh  to your place and feeding him lovingly, you can  get, while remaining at home, greater benefit than  what you get by going on pilgrimage to 68 holy  places. (5) Kabir says that a blind and wrecked  person wanders hither and thither, but he does not  know that God is present within. (6)

(18)

Some rare and gifted soul will attain Nirvan  (the region of Brahm). Three Loks are under the  sway of Jama. It is the fourth Lok where Nam abides.  (1) Indra and others became exhausted searching  for this Pad. Brahma also got tired studying Purans.  Gorakh Dutta, Vashistha, Vyas and Shambhoo, were all wearied. Kabir says that only some rare person can find abode in that q Pad, who gets initiated in its secrets by Sat Guru. (2, 3, 4)

(19)

All are engaged in worship, but their delusions  are not removed. They remain in the net of  illusions and doubts. (1) Caught in the trap of  passions and desires, spread by Kal, Jivas can  neither visualise the Reality, nor can they realise the  Shabd. They are unable to take refuge of Guru. They  are proud and arrogant. (2-3) They have lost the  inner eyes and are thus unable to recognise Brahm.  They go astray holding delusive beliefs. (4) They kill a living being and offer it to a lifeless object (viz., an idol of stone). To kill a living being is a great sin. (5) 0 cruel ! you do not realise the pain of a living being. You kill animals (6) You for a momentary satisfaction of tongue.  pray with folded hands and standing on one leg,  "0 Protector ! I am under your protection. I  surrender before Thee." But it is just like the  prayer of a blind person who sees nothing. It is  all hypocrisy. Because of such actions, the sinful go to hell. In fact, law of Karams is inexorable. (7-9) Blessed are those who remain in the company of Sadhs and have obtained true knowledge. (10) Make a firm resolve to reach Sat Pad, become fearless, realise your own self and visualise the Reality in Nam. (11) Kabir says that you must keep your eyes on the Reality and that Brahm speaks within everybody, and this whole creation is His. (12)

(20)

Awake, 0 my blessed Surat, awake. Why remain lost in the slumber of infatuation and  attachment ? Get up and engage in Bhajan.  Listen to melodious sounds reverberating within  you. (1-2) With folded hands and putting your head  at the holy Feet, beg for the boon of steadfast  devotion. Kabir says, "O Sadh, run away from this  world." (3-4)

(21)

0 mind ! make preparations for the day when Jama (Kal, death) comes to take you away, and will  not wait for a moment. Jama will squeeze out life  by thrashing you with sticks. Your eyes will then  be filled with tears. (1-2) The ocean of worldly  existence is a deep and unfordable path, with deep  rivers flowing. There is no boat or anchor. Many  people are waiting. The rower is heartless. (3-4) Not to say of wealth, land, wife, mother, father, son and brother, even your own body does not accompany you. (5-6) The messengers of Jam (or agents of death) hurl you in the abyss in hell where you will be tormented terribly. Kabir says, if you take heed even now, all your sins will be forgiven. (7-8)

(22)

We are absorbed in the love of the Supreme  Being. We are free from all cares. We live  detached from this world. (1) Those who are separated from their beloved Lord, are wandering  from door to door. As for ourselves, our Beloved  is within us, so we do not have to wait. (2) Most  of the worldly people are after name and fame.  But for us Guru is all in all. We have no friendship or intimacy with the world. (3) Neither are we separated from the Beloved nor is He from us even  for a moment. As we love Him and Him alone we  have no instability or inconsistency. (4) Kabir says,  "Be absorbed in the love of the Supreme Being.  Cast duality, i.e., remove separation or disunion.  When you have to proceed on this subtle and  delicate path, why should you carry a heavy  load on your head ?" (5)

(23)

How shall I meet my Beloved ? I step on the path with great care and caution, but I slip  again and again, as the road is uneven and slippery.  I cannot stand firm. (1) Worldly fear and family  prestige make me shirk as I am staying in my  parent's home. It is rather difficult to shed notions  of fear and shame. (2) The mansion of my Beloved  is very high. I am unable to climb it. The beloved  Lord is unapproachable, and Surat (spirit) is  ignorant. That is why she is wavering and shaking. (3) intermediary Kabir says, "I met Sat Guru, the  (who imparted to me the knowledge of the beloved Lord). I was then able to traverse  the path, and unite with the Lord, who embraced  me and bestowed eternal happiness on me. (4)

(24)

0 foolish mind ! give up vacillation. When a  virtuous wife has once decided to burn herself with  her husband's pyre and with this purpose she takes  the box of vermilion in her hand, it is but meet and  proper for her to consume herself in the fire.  Similarly, when one has set one's foot on the path  of salvation one should engender love for and faith  in Guru and work hard for making the spiritual  sounds audible within oneself. (1) Give up greed  and infatuation and illusions and delusions. Be  fearless and let the Surat dance rapturously with  Shabd. He alone is entitled to be called brave who  has no fear of death. A Sati (virtuous wife) is not  after collecting utensils. (2) Fear of world and the  sense of losing prestige, these are the snares put  around the neck. If you retreat after advancing  forward, the world will ridicule you the more. (3)  Just as without burning oneself with one's husband  one cannot be called Sati (virtuous) and without fighting bravely in the battlefield one cannot be  called brave, similarly without kindling the fire of love  and yearning for Guru within yourself, you cannot  attain the final and ultimate goal in Parmarth. (4)  Kabir says that the whole world is full of dirt and  filth. He alone who engages himself in the remembrance of Nam is pure and pious. So do not give up Bhakti (devotion), you are sure to rise, although ups and downs are incidental to the path of love and devotion. (5)

(25)

The bliss of the supreme source of spirituality  can be enjoyed only if the desires for the worldly  prosperity and the sensual pleasures are given up.  Just as tree exists in its seed, all evils and maladies  spring from desires. (1) Set fire to all desires.  Practise strong renunciation. Kabir exhorts  you to become free from desires, and to  merge your Surat into Shabd and thus accomplish your task. (2)

(26)

A brave does not run away from the  battlefield. If he runs away, he is not brave. He  has to give a furious fight to the forces of passion,  anger, greed and pride. He has to use the weapons  of humility and meekness, truthfulness and patience.  He has to strike with the sword of Nam. Kabir says  that only some brave will wage war. Cowards will  run away. (1-2)

(27)

To lead the life of a true Sadh is difficult and  hard. It is more difficult and harder than the  practice of a Sati (who burns herself with her  husband) and a brave (who dies fighting on the  battlefield). A brave's fight is over in a few moments  and a Sati takes just a moment to surrender herself  to flames. But a Sadh's fight is a life long affair. He  has to fight against the forces of Kal and Maya  day and night. If there is even a slight slackness  and lapse, the mind will instantaneously fall from  Gagan (sky) to the ground. (1-2)

(28)

0 Sadh ! Think of the welfare of your soul  while alive. You should take this matter seriously  and make endeavours to achieve salvation during  your life time. If the noose of Karam is not  cut now, how can you hope to achieve salvation  afterwards ? (I) It is a false expectation that  you would get salvation after death.  In fact, what you have achieved here, you will get  hereafter. If you have not worked out your  salvation in this body and life, you will get abode  in hell. (2) The covetous mind wanders far and  wide to obtain relief from the pain of birth and  death, but never bows before Sadh and Sant who  can cut asunder the noose of Karams. (3) Kabir  says, "Be truthful and sincere in Parmarth. Search for Sat Guru. Engender faith in Sat Nam. I am the well-wisher of devotees. In fact I am always at their service." (4)

(29)

Know that the path of devotion is delicate. Desire and desirelessness, both are to be discarded.  Be absorbed in the devotion to the Holy Feet. (1)  Always attend Satsang of Sadhs. Be happy in the  company of Sadhs. Keep your Surat absorbed in  Shabd like fish in water. (2-3) Give up ego and  vanity like an oilman discarding refuse of oil-seeds  and oil-cakes. Adopt compassion, forgiveness and  contenment. Develop humility. (4-5) Delay not  in giving up ego in the path of Parmarth. Kabir  says that He has explained the path of Bhakti (devotion). (6-7)

(30)

Sat Guru, my beloved Sovereign, has dyed me  in the colour of Love. My whole self has been  wounded by Shabd. All medicines are proving  ineffective. What can the poor physician do ? (1-2)  None of the gods, human beings, sages, auliyas,  etc., knows it (love). Kabir says that this devotee  has seen all the colours, but the colour of love is altogether different. (3-4)

 (31)

Guru has given me a wonderful herb. I like  it. It is full of nectar. (1) It has been secretly placed inside the wonderful bungalow in the city of body. By its very smell all the five snakes (passion, anger, greed, attachment and ego) and their twentyfive females (Prakritis) have died. (2-3) Kal swallows the whole world, but he is frightened on seeing Sat Guru. Kabir says, '10 Sadh ! I have attained salvation along with my family. (4-5)

(32)

0 brother ! you will come to realize your  folly in the end. Just now you kill animals to fill  your belly and get fat. (1-2) At the moment you  are feeding yourself by robbing others, thus putting  the noose around your neck. Three soldiers are  always after you, they are watching your activities. (3-4) All your life you have been abusing Sants  and Sadhs. As a result of such behaviour, thorns  will prick you at every step. (5-6) Kabir says,  "Listen, 0 Sadh ! this world is shaky and vacillating;  whosoever speaks the truth is killed, and a liar is  believed. (7-8)

 TULSI SAHEB'S SHABDS

(1)

The human body is perishable. All this wealth,  dwelling, relatives and even the body will be left  behind, and you have to go to the forest (crematorium). The body, which has been made strong by  taking milk, sugar and butter, will perish in a  moment. (1) Tulsi Saheb says that the great nobles  and princes who held their sway far and wide are  all gone. Their mansions are deserted and not a  single soul is there to light a candle. Then what of  you, an insignificant creature, whose every activity is leading to the meshes of Kal. (2)

(2)

Why are you getting lost in body, relatives  and world ? You have to leave all these in four  days. (1) Very many jivas, thinking and calling wealth, property and country their own, left this  world. After great many efforts they amassed  wealth and property, but they did not care at all to  know about the secrets of their soul and their  Maker. (2) 0 insane ! Come to your senses; proceed  towards the destination. If you fail to take heed,  Jama will summon you. (3) Tulsi Saheb says,  "Jama is every moment recording your acts.  He will summon you soon and announce his  judgement." (4)

(3)

Your stay in this world is only for four days.  There is none whom you can call your own. All  are wayfarers. Everybody will go his way soon.  (1) Work out your salvation. Keep it in your  mind that you have to depart from here. It is not  the place for your permanent sojourn. Repair to  the region from where you may, not have to come  to this world. (2) This body of yours is maintained  by air (breath). When it goes out, the body  perishes. For a short span of life, is it worthwhile  to bear tortures of Jama ? (3) Why do you go  astray on having a little pleasure ? You will have to quit the world and its pleasures after some  time, just as a traveller stays only for the night and  leaves in the morning. (4) Tulsi Saheb says, "Why  are you sleeping ? The Jama is at your door. Start  making preparations for the next world in the  morning, otherwise it will become dark at night." (5)

(4)

Cast your eyes about, and you will see that there is  no stability in this world. It is a game of four days  only, nothing will accompany you. (1) Tulsi Saheb  says that wealth, property and relatives, nothing  is going to prove useful. A moth is consumed by  the flame in a moment, so the jiva leaves the body  and the world and goes away in the twinkling of  an eye. (2)

(5)

Tulsi Saheb says that at the moment people  are getting puffed up at their wealth, property and  names and fame, They take great care of body by massaging it with oil and smearing it with  scents. But all these pleasures are only for four  days, as this body will mingle with dust in the end;  Jama will pass a red-hot wire across the eyes.  (1-2)

 (6)

People are greedy. They are running after  sensual pleasures. None cares to enquire about the  Creator. Ascetics and anchorites are shouting the name  of Ram (god), preaching that salvation will be attained after death. Tulsi Saheb says that this is all  false. If you do not work out your salvation in  your life time, how can you be sure about it after  death ? (1-2)

(7)

This world is. a market-place, where nothing is of avail. (1) Father and mother, husband and wife, and daughters and sons, none accompanies the departing soul. You can observe this for yourself. (2) Tulsi Saheb says that all these are different kinds of snares of Kai. (3)

 (8)

In this world everyone goes empty-handed in the end. (1) All worldly affections are unreal like a dream. (2) Tulsi Saheb says that as long as one breathes, one is constantly engulfed in worries  and anxieties. (3)

(9)

You devote your time in applying scented oil  to your body. You are getting yourself involved  in mundane affairs. But you have neglected the  Truth. (1) You take pleasure in the company of  father, mother, son and wife, but you never realize  for a moment that all these will last only for four  days. You have forgotten the reality and are  engrossed in unreality. (2-3) Tulsi Saheb says that after your leaving this body, Kai will settle account with you. (4)

(10)

You can yourself observe whether there is any security and safety in the world. (1) Pandavas, Vibhishan, Bhim, etc., all have gone. No trace is to be found anywhere. (2) Ravan, the king of Lanka, which was made of gold, was not able to take even a bit of it with himself in the end. (3) Tulsi Saheb says, "You are an insignificant being. You count for nothing. Apply yourself to Satsang for your good." (4)

 (11)

One day we have to leave this world. So let  us talk about it. Pleasure and prosperity, wealth  and treasure will all have to be abandoned in the end.  Riches and high position in the world, all have to  be given up at the time of death. (1-2) When Kal  issues orders for death, all the property, land,  elephants and horses will prove of no service.  (3-4) Cut asunder the ties and b o n d a g e s  of wealth, wife and house. At the last moment, you  will pick up nothing out of these. Your soul will  go alone. (5-6) Tulsi. Saheb says, "All worldly  affections are fake. All waste their life by getting  entangled in the world. They give rise to innumerable desires for worldly objects, thinking that they are going to last for ever, though life here is very short." (7-8)

 (12)

This world is unreal like a dream. There is  none here who is truly yours. This body which  is made of dust will return to dust. Only the  load of Karmas will remain with you. (1-2) Be afraid  of the cruelties of Kal as no one knows when this  body will come to an end. Kal will tie you in hell  for ages together and subject you to endless  tortures. (3-4) You can become free from the  snares of Kal only when you surrender your body,  mind and head (ego) to Sat Guru. Your yearning  and love for Him should be such as that of fish for  water. (5-6) Engage in the performance of  Sumiran with deep meditation or concentration,  without moving your tongue, so that you may  reach near Him and enjoy eternal happiness. (7)  Looking at the mirrored path, i.e., traversing the  path, you will reach the Mansion of the  Lord and attain your object. (8) Tulsi Saheb says that if you are not able to understand His teaching, you cannot attain the ultimate abode. (9)

(13)

Get ready and make a start on the path. The  mind is like a gardener and body a garden. The  gardener allures wayfarers by offering them laddus  or sweet-balls (sensual pleasures) which are really  poisonous, and thus rob them of their capital. (1)  The mind is entangled in the inn (body) by the  allurements of the inn-keeper (Maya) and remains  in her company day and night. When you come  to Sat Guru, you are reminded to settle accounts  with the innkeeper and it is then that you realize  what wealth you have lost, (2) Make knowledge  your horse, put a bridle of love on him, strike him  with the heel of Surat, and thus cross over the sea  (of worldliness). (3) Tulsi Saheb says, "0 blind, why  are you still asleep? Leave the cot, and engage  yourself in the remembrance of the Name of the  Supreme Being, as Kal has surrounded you from  all the ten sides. (4)

(14)

0 negligent ! Why sleep, beware, Kal is standing over your head. You are friendly and  affectionate to Maya. You have no hesitation in  using force and coercion against your fellow beings.  But you do not know how powerful Jama is. He  will cast you into hell, and inflict tortures. (1-2)  Y o u k n o w that one day you will be  overtaken by death, your body will be thrown into  fire. Still you are enamoured of dishes of milk  and sugar, which are nothing but arrows from  the Kal's bow. In the end, Kal will score a victory  over you. (3-4) You have wasted your life by  indulging in sensual pleasures. Now old age has  come and your black hair have turned grey. Your  wife and son are now avoiding you; they wish that  you may die soon. Maya has made a fool of you  by enticing you into the world. (5-8) Tulsi Saheb says that because of arrogant mind you have not cared to recognise the Lord. No\v there is no use crying over spilt milk as you have remained ignorant all the time. (9-10)

(15)

The span of life is slipping away. Your life is,  shortening at every moment of day and night. Why sleep in negligence, get up at once. 0 brute ! this body is like the wall of sand which will  collapse in a moment. (1-2) Just as when balls of  coloured water and powder are thrown, they burst,  similarly your body will be destroyed one day.  But you are getting entangled in the snares of  sensual pleasures. (3-4) This body is made of  perishable matter. You assume one body after  another, and thus keep on roaming in different  categories of life. Your mind is engrossed in the  pleasures of senses and the objects of the world.  (5-6) Tulsi Saheb says that you have lost the  potentiality and the opportunity bestowed upon  you in the human form. It is a pity that you  have not realised the importance of Bhajan  (spiritual endeavours). (7)

(16)

The soul departed from the body leaving  behind mother, father, relations and wealth. (1)  You built house for voluptuous enjoyment, and  procured comfortable beds. But at the time of  leaving the body the soul went alone, and the body  was thrown into the woods. (2-4) All the kinsmen, caste-fellows, sons and grandsons assembled and made  a pile of wood. They mounted your body on, and  set fire to it. (5-6) One gets location after death  according to one's Karams. The soul of the higher  order merges with the denizens in Mansarovar,  while the debased jivas get overpowered by  perversity. (7-8) Tulsi Saheb says, "Thus the  Hansas (the souls of higher order) enjoy pearls of Mansarovar lake while the crows (vicious jivas) are born again and again in the world. (9-10)

(17)

Though endowed with the human form, you  achieved nothing. You have remained addicted to  pride, and have not been able to realise your true  self. Thus the foolish jiva ever remains deeply involved with Maya (materialism). (1-2) You have amassed  wealth, property, gold and silver but at the time of  death, they have to be abandoned. (3-4) It is a  pity that even on being endowed with the noble  faculties of human form, you remain deluded.  Body, mind, riches, nothing will prove of avail.  Tulsi Saheb says, "Give up this habitation of mere  skin. Leave alone all material objects. Adopt the Name of the Supreme Being. (5-7)

 (18)

The Vedas and Purans are devoid of true  knowledge. The wealth of spirit-force is destroyed  by reading them. (1) By reading Bhagvat, ego is  strengthened and mind becomes conceited. (2) You  do not care to get initiated in the path to the  Inaccessible. On the contrary, your greed for Maya  (material objects) has been greatly enhanced. (3)  People employ priests for the performance of  certain worships and rites and pay for their services.  The priests pronounce "redemption" for their  clients, but the latter become ghosts and goblins  after death. (4) Tulsi Saheb says that for the sake of a little bit of taste of tongue, and considering that to be the real happiness, they have to visit hell in the end. (5)

(19)

People take pride in worshipping idols and striking gongs in the temples and perform various hypocritical activities to please their disciples. (1) Why do they not make researches within themselves, where resides their soul ? (2) Foolish people  worship stone-idols and waste their lives for nothing  (3) Search for the spot in between the high and the  low, i.e., seat yourself or your conscious entity at  the third Til, and witness the wonderful spectacle there, by the grace of Guru. (4)

(20)

He whom Sants love and worship is different  and distinct from all gunas (qualities) and deities.  Brahma and the Vedas know nothing of Him.  Shiva and Shesh have not met Him. Yogis and  sages cannot reach there. Smritis and Shastras stand  nowhere. (1-3) Jyoti and Niranjan have no access  there. That is why the path of Sants is inaccessible.  (4) How can poor Brahmans and Pandits, who are  mere worldly and fill their bellies by begging, can  know the secrets of the Supreme Being? (5) By  begging for the filth, they were swept away like  bullocks in the current of worldliness, and wasted  their life. (6) Tulsi Saheb says that the path of Sants is quite distinct from Nirgun and Sargun, and none other than Sants has access to it. (7)

(21)

O fool ! search for the Supreme Being, who has  brought about the entire creation and each hair of  whose has the refulgence of crores of suns. (1) Tulsi  Saheb says, "His abode is free from death, decay, pain  and suffering. All the ten incarnations, including Ram and Krishna, cannot have access there." (2)

(22)

Tulsi Saheb says that Sant Mat is the only true  religion, all else is fake. So-called religious men (ascetics, etc.) are all drifting with the vagaries of mind.  None can find out the true path without the help of  Sants. All are wandering in the four species or  classes of life (1-2)

(23)

O you ! Forgetting your original home, you  have got yourself entangled in illusions and delusions. You are ignorant. Indulging in rites and rituals, you have put yourself in the trap of Kal. (1) You are miserably misguided ! You are drifting in the shoreless river of desires. (2) All day and night you are restless in hopes and  frustrations. You are being consumed in the fire  of greed, you are being burnt while alive. (3-4)  Tulsi Saheb says that even after being blessed with  human form, you have not made any endeavour to  cross the ocean of existence. You have missed  this golden opportunity. You remain under the sway of mind and desires. (5-6)

(24)

What good have you done to yourself by having  a human form ? You do not keep company with  Sadhs. You remain steeped in perverse thinking.  For ages your Surat has been soaked in sensual  pleasures. You remain engrossed in them all the  twentyfour hours. (1-2) Tulsi Saheb says that you have  not cherished a desire for meeting Guru of the  highest region. On the contrary, you have been  engrossed in the worldly objects. You have eaten  poison and wasted your life. You could not grasp the Reality. (3-4)

(25)

O ignorant ! Do not be proud. You will not  get human form again and again. Here, the stay  is only for two days, after which this body is going  to be destroyed. (1) 0 unaware ! death is hovering  over your head. All the time the hunter is shooting  arrows at you. All have been beaten by the hunter Jama. (2) Kal has encompassed the whole world. None can escape. There is great oppression and injustice in the world. He alone who seeks protection of the Supreme Being, can be saved. (3) Tulsi Saheb says that your days are numbered. Death knell is sounding all the time. You have never been true to yourself. Yon never cherished any desire for the welfare of your soul. (4)

(26)

The world has become careless about Parmarth.  People are lost day and night in the pursuit of  unreal things. The time of death is near at hand,  yet you do not seem to have fear of Jama. (1-2) The hunter Kal has entered in your body, still you are freely indulging in Maya (material objects and sensual pleasures). Kal will grab you in the manner a lion grabs a cow. (3-4) Only those will be saved who come in the saran (refuge) of Sants. There is no security anywhere else. (5-6) Without adopting saran (protection) of Sants, you will remain wandering in the cycle of births and deaths.  You will be drowned in the ocean of existence.  You will be roaming in all the four species for ages  together and the load of sin and ego will go on  increasing. (7-8) Those who are steeped in ego and  because of their power and authority, fret and frown  at their subordinates, will receive shoe-beating at  the hands of Kal and in the end will be dragged to  the lowest bottom of hell from where their reclamation is not possible. (9-10) Remember, you are not  going to get this human body again and again.  Why do you get too much engrossed in family and  relatives ? Their company is debased and treacherous. Kal will drag you by your hair. (11-12) You are wasting your life hopelessly. You have been noosed by Moh (infatuation, attachment). This life is momentary like dew drops. (13-14) None is going to accompany you. Then why should you  bear constant beating, by creating attachments in this world? Tulsi Saheb says that your life is being spent and you will go empty-handed in the end. (15-16)

(27)

People spend their life in reading and studying  Vedas, Purans, Shastras and the books of Grammar,  but never think about the high attainments of Sants.  They only become more and more conceited. They  tell the stories of Purans and collect money in lieu  thereof. They work day and night for their kith and  kin become more and more greedy. They never  think of the Reality. (1-2)

(28)

Tulsi Saheb says that Kal has tied Brahma, Vishnu,  Shesh and all others. He has sent Narad, Shukdev  and Vyas into the cycle of four species of life.  Hanuman, Janak and Vibhishan were not saved.  Not necessary to recount sages and holy men, Kal  has devoured all of them. (1-2)

(29)

Tulsi Saheb says that Kal is very powerful and  ferocious. None can gauge his tactics. No one  except Sants can free Jivas from his captivity.  Even Bhagwan who is considered so great was  knocked down by him. None of the incarnations  (of Brahm) was spared(1-2)

(30)

(refuge) of Sants,  Only those, who took saran  reached the destination, otherwise there is no  safety anywhere as Kal gnaws all the creation.  Tulsi Saheb says that Kal fears only Sants and bows before them. So there is no other place for Jiva except the refuge of Sants, and there is no salvation without Sants (1-2)

 (31)

Everybody knows that this human form is scarce even for the gods. But people are so foolish  that without knowing its sublimity, they desire for  heaven. (1) After reaping the fruits of their good  deeds, the denizens of heaven and paradise go to  hell and again wander in the four species. So what  is the good of such deeds ? (2) Tulsi Saheb spits at heaven and attains true essence. (3)

(32)

Listen ! one who feels proud of his knowledge  will wander in the four species, and one who behaves  meekly will find the Truth. (1) He alone is said to  have acquired knowledge, who, after reading and  studying and knowing everything, considers himself  very low and humble. (2) Tulsi Saheb says that he  who gives up desire for the world listens to the  teachings of Sants. (3)

(33)

Vedant describes Brahm. But without Sant  nothing can be achieved. One who can recognise the worthlessness of matter and realizes the spirit force will be able to loosen the knot of matter and spirit. In this way alone can one achieve the highest truth. (1-2) Tulsi Saheb says that one who rises above the heavens is perfect Brahm. (3)

(34)

Sant is He who reaches the end, the ultimate goal,  which is not attainable by the practice of Yoga and  Gyan. He alone realizes that abode in a moment  which is beyond the reach of the world and its  lord. (1-2) Tulsi Saheb says that only some rare,  dear and brave souls attain it by the practice of  Surat Shabd Yoga. (3)

(35)

Sat Pad (Region of Truth) is limitless and  unfathomable. (1) Only he who has access to that  region can impart its knowledge and secrets. (2)  They cannot be obtained by studying the Vedas and Purans or by performing Yoga practices. Tulsi Saheb gives out the path leading to Sat Pad, which is not known to anyone else except Sants. (3-4)

(36)

In Shrimat Bhagwat, Vyas says that the human  form is so noble and great that the entire creation  is represented on a small scale in it. (1) One can  find out by studying the second chapter of Shrimat  Bhagwat that nowhere has the worship of wood and  stone been prescribed. (2) Lord Krishna says in  Gita that those who recognise him need not adopt  any religious of the world. (3) Vedant says that all  souls are like perfect Brahm, but Jivas do not know  the real significance of the statement. (4) They  spend their lives worshipping stones, but never see  any good. (5) After death, they have to assume  the form of what they have been cherishing in life.  (6) They adopted the ways of the Vedas and wasted their life in rituals and observances. (7) It is a pity that they took stone idol to be God. (8)

(37)

Sants and Sadhs are unfathomable. Without  taking their saran (protection) the life of Jivas is  being wasted in the company of Kal, Karams and  sufferings. It is, therefore, incumbent upon Jivas  to devote their Surat to Sants and Sadhs. (1) Crores  of incarnations of Ram and Krishna proved useless  as they could not take Jivas to the ultimate abode.  Even the Vedas and Brahma were not able to cross  over the territory of Kal who ate them as well. (2)  Mahadev and Vishnu and all the minor gods did  not know the secrets of the Supreme Being. They  only served Kal who tied them. (3) Tulsi  Saheb says that you may try millions of ways but  without Satsang (company of Sants) you cannot  attain salvation; you will only receive beatings from Jama. (4)

(38)

People give trouble to Sants and Sadhs; and keep company with prostitutes. They are in fact  brutes; they follow evil ways and have no sense of  discrimination between good and bad. (1) They are  getting burdened by the load of Karams and are  engrossed in sensual pleasures. Such corrupt and  dishonest fellows will go to hell. (2) They look  clean, but are wretched in deeds. They put marks  for sectarial distinction on their foreheads, but are  always ready to create trouble. They are by nature  bad, arrogant, wicked, cruel and passionate. Lust  and desire prevail over them. (3-4) They keep the  appearance of a great scholar, but are mean, and  fit only to go into lower species. They are debased,  and self-destroyer. (5) Tulsi Saheb says that they are hypocrites, who behave truthfully with the world, but apply double standard with Sants. So they will lick the dust. (6)

(39)

0 pandits ! Fie upon your study of the Vedas,  Gita and Bhagwat. You have no hesitation in  taking fish. (1) You first take bath and then prepare  food with a great show of cleanliness. But you cook  meat, most unholy and impure. Your clients give you a sumptuous dinner but you wrangle for fee  for performing rituals. (2-3) You make your clients  worship the goddess Bhawani by sacrificing goats  before her idol. You start shouting if you get even  a penny less than what you demand. (4) You waste  your life by following unethical ways, and cultivating  desires for the world. Thus, you Pandits are also  not spared from the sufferings of hell. You, the  Brahmans, are considered to belong to the highest  caste, and are, therefore, called great. But a  Brahman is he who knows Brahm. Since you make  no spiritual endeavours to realize Brahm, on the  contrary, you are absorbed in false notions of  religion, and create attachments with the world and  its objects, and are proud of these things, you are  getting filthy by committing evil and bad deeds,  and you will reap the fruits of your actions in the  hell. (6-8)

(40)

People go to Dwarka (place of pilgrimage  for Hindus), and get themselves branded or marked  by a hot metallic seal, like bulls. Brahmans, belong to the high-caste make burn-marks on both the arms. They waste their life for nothing.  (1-2) Even the incarnations of Ram and Krishna,  and later Buddha, were subject to the Karmic law.  (3) Krishna indulged in recreational activities and  sports with Gopis (cowherdesses). (4) Krishna sent his own devotee Arjun to the Himalayas for ending his life, and asked Udho to engage in penances and meditations. (5) Arjun, whose arrows were considered infallible, could not protect the Gopis (cowherdesses) from being molested. (6) Arjun's arrows became powerless. (7) The Gopis started weeping shamelessly on the death of Krishna. (8) Those who were very dear to him (Krishna), invariably suffered a lot of pain. (9) He himself was subject to death and birth. How can he bestow salvation on others ? (10) As a punishment for killing Bali, Krishna got hurt  in his foot, and had to leave the body.(11-12)  Tulsi Saheb says, "How can I like those who pin  faith in such incarnations ? In fact, Krishna and all other incarnations were Kal. They led the Jivas astray." (13-14)

(41)

0 brother ! Do not go to Badrinath, where the worship of stone idols is prevalent. It is on a  hill, with forests, and the path is so difficult that  one gets blisters on one's feet and suffers a lot.  The temple and idol are attractive and beautiful  and it is said that the stone, the idol is made of,  is paras (which, according to legend, immediately converts into gold any metal it touches). (1-2) The priests of temple beg for donations from all who  go there. For the sake of money, they have  established a stone-idol and induce people to  worship it. (3-4) At Har-ki-peri in Hardwar, no  one will find Hari by taking a bath there, because  they are mere steps of stone. There is only water  and by taking bath in it one gets nothing but  arrogance. (5-6) By reading Shastras and Purans  they think that salvation will be attained after  death. (7) They think that certain observances on  various sacred days will earn merit, but they remain  unaware of the secrets of their inner self. (8) They  sing the praise of the idol made of paras saying  that iron is turned into gold by its mere touch.  (9) But the irony is that the priests do not get even  iron for themselves. How can their clients get  gold ? (10) These rituals and observances and  pilgrimage and fasting are the ways Kal has introduced to cheat Jivas. False religions have been astray. (11-12) Tulsi Saheb enjoins upon all to find out true Satsang and join it. Sat Guru will reveal that the entire creation is represented in the  human body, and He will teach the Shabd  Yoga. (13-14)

(42)

The unfathomable cannot be perceived without  the help of Guru. By reading four Vedas, eighteen  Purans, six Shastras and nine Grammars, people  become scholars, but are unable to get rid of  illusions. They engage themselves in unnecessary  and useless discussions. (1-2) They keep on giving  rise to desires which goad them to engage in evil  deeds. The powerful Kal is always with them. He  has been eating up all animate and inanimate  objects since ages. (3-4) There is none who can  cut these fetters and rescue them from Kal, except  Sants and their Satsang. By the grace of Sants can  the Jiva remove the load of old creeds, and become  pious and pure. (5-6) Tulsi Saheb says that the  Guru resides in Gagan and to meet Him Surat has  to rise up. Only in this human form which is a  replica of the whole infinite expanse, Jiva can work  out his salvation and can easily cross the ocean of  existence. (7-8)

(43)

O Sat Guru ! provide me aid and protection,  so that I may ascend to the higher region. I shall  fall at the Feet of Sat Guru and beseech Him  to help me in removing all the evils from my  mind. Thus Kal and Karma will be rendered  powerless. (1) 1 am ashamed at my shortcomings  and I promise that I will not hesitate in following  the path shown by Sat Guru. He is the only one  having access to the Lord. I beg forgiveness of  Sat Guru for whom nothing is difficult. (2) When I  started proceeding with Sat Guru, all the obstacles  on the path were removed and all the sufferings  ended. As I engaged myself in Sumiran (utterance  of Nam) all the disturbing elements turned aside.  (3) When my Surat reached Gagan, I met Sat  Guru, who guided my path onwards. He embraced  me and made me one with Himself, and, by His  grace, my Surat ultimately reached the abode which  is unfathomable and where there is no fear of any  kind (4)

 (44)

I am getting mad with intense yearning, and  tears are flowing continuously from my eyes. All  the time the pain of separation from my Beloved  is pinching me. I have become unmindful of my  body. I am unconscious of what is happening  around me. (1-2) Desires appear and disappear,  but are not able to bring back conciousness to mind,  it has become like a corpse. The physician cannot  diagnose my ailment by feeling the pulse. Then  how can he prescribe any medicine? (3-4) My  heart is broken and injured. My pain is indescribable. (5) Tulsi Saheb says that Sat Guru is the  only physician who can diagnose this pain. He  alone knows the cure. Only he who himself is a sufferer can know the pangs of separation from the Beloved. (6-7)

(45)

I am in love with my Beloved. His separation  aches my heart. As the poison spreads quickly when snake bites, and the head become dizzy, so  love for the Beloved is giving me pain constantly.  Neither food nor water has any taste for me. (1-2)  The yearning for my Beloved is spreading like  circles in a whirlpool, spreading in all the ten directions and making my heart uneasy and impatient.  It is very difficult to bear the pangs of love. (3-4)  To become a lover and to make love are signs of  death. When one mingles oneself in dust and  becomes dead, the certificate of immortality is  gained. (5-6) Tulsi Saheb says that the body and  mind are suffering from the pangs of separation  from the Beloved. This path is as difficult as cutting one's head off the body. (7-8)

(46)

O friend ! It is the month of Asarh[6]. The  clouds of yearning are gathering in the sky of my  heart. The lightning flashes all round. Without  my Beloved, I am uneasy and perplexed. My mind  is getting disturbed for want of message from the  Beloved. The mind and the body are greatly agitated. In this state of perplexity neither anything pleases me nor my heart stays anywhere.  The longing for the Beloved is eating into my  vitals. My mind is going astray without the  darshan of the Beloved. (1) 0 friend ! The month of Sawan [7]has come. I am getting very  much perturbed and restless with the yearning  for the Beloved. It is raining with a pattering sound, and the peacocks and frogs are screaming and croaking, hearing which the waves  of yearning and longing rise in my heart.  Terrible anguish has overtaken me. Where can  I find my Beloved? I am uttering the Name  of my Beloved. (2) In the month of Bhadon[8] it is raining heavily. When the remembrance of my Beloved comes to my heart, tears drop from the reddened eyes like rain from the clouds. The yearning pricks my heart like an arrow. (3) In the month of Kuar[9], Surat, the paragon of virtues, has lost memory of  its original abode because of the company of  crow-like impudent persons. It has forgotten all  about the delicacies available in its own abode  of pure spirituality, the secrets of which are  disclosed only in Satsang of Sants. Without adopting saran (refuge) of Sat Guru, the path cannot be known, nor the method of elevating  the Surat and mind to higher regions. (4)  With the approach of the month of Katik[10], the  Surat receives secrets of all chakras and ganglia  in the human microcosm. It starts its upward  journey from the Third Til, the centre at which  is to be found the first true form of Surat (spirit).  It proceeds to Sahas-dal-kanwal (the sphere of eight  lotuses). It adopts the saran (refuge) of Sat Guru,  wipes off impurities and attains true knowledge.  The heart is illumined with the inner light. (5) When  in the month of Aghan[11], all the virtues and  vices are annihilated, the Surat takes bath in  Tribeni. All the Karams and delusions and  illusions are washed away. Those who have not  bathed in Tribeni will be trampled by Jama.  None will be saved. Jama will give them thrashing.  (6) The month of Poos[12] creates a craving in Surat  to unite with the Purush (Lord). Without such a  craving, there can be no redemption. When Sat  Guru is met, He guides Surat on the path to the  Beloved Lord, and ultimately enables it to unite  with and merge in Him. (7) In the month of Magh[13] the memory of the highest abode is revived. Some  rare Surat becomes detached from the body and mind, gives up all evil thinking, and applies itself  wholly to the remembrance of the Beloved. (8) In  Phagun[14], leaving aside all considerations, Surat openly  plays Holi with the Beloved. It scatters all worldly  desires like the red powder thrown on one another  in the observance of the Holi festival. It devotes  itself to the Holy Feet of Guru. Through the path  of Neel Shikhar, it ascends to Sunn. (9) In the  month of Chait[15], Surat gets chet (awakening), and  engenders love for the Beloved. Its effect is visible  in the eyes and the lover forgets all about himself.  (10) In the month of Baisakh[16], Sants reveal that  Surat (spirit) is a drop or emanation from the  Supreme Being who is the ocean of spirituality, love  and joy. Hearing this message, the devotee gives  up all cunningness and develops true humility.  He joins Satsang of Sants, and abandons pride of  the body and mind. (11) The month of Jeth [17]is  marked with intense heat, which is most difficult  to bear. When the Jiva becomes truly a slave  of Sants, he bears the heat and burning of gadhat  (beating and mending) applied by Sants for the reformation and correction of the mind. The Jiva, giving  up delusions and illusions, applies himself to  Bhajan. He succeeds in bringing his foolish and wanton mind under control. He becomes dead while alive. His Surat, detaching itself from all, rises upwards. (12)

(47)

Without darshan of the Beloved, I am undergoing  intense pangs of separation. Without Sat Guru, the life is loathsome. If one is not able to know about the Original Abode,  one has achieved nothing by taking birth in  this world. It was a great misfortune to leave the  Prime and Perfect Abode and come down here.  After innumerable deaths and births, this noble  human form was gained. But the Jiva indulged in  pleasures and prosperity, and utterly forgot to serve  his Maker. The stay in this world is only for four  days. Then death will again come. (1) You have  not made proper use of your human form, which is  rarely obtained. Your vision is defective. That is why  you do not realize the presence of the Beloved who  is always with you in the innermost quarter of your  heart. As a result of this carelessness you are ever  subjected to pain and suffering. Who else can make you realize your folly except Sat Guru ?One  may search and search for the Beloved, but one  cannot find Him, unless one seeks the help of Sat  Guru. (2) This body is made of clay. It will  one day surely perish. When the current of Kal  enters the body, it will make you depart in a  moment. You are continuously in the round of  birth and death and pain and pleasure because of  desires and bondages. In all the four Yugas, you  have been wandering in the cycle of eightyfour.  (3) The relationship of son, mother, father and  others is worldly and keeps you entangled in the  world, subject to pain and suffering. The Supreme  Being, the Lord of entire creation, is not pleased  with those who are attached to the world and its  objects. All this is Kal's snare. Association with  Sat Guru is the highest and the most sublime  activity which confers true and perfect salvation.  (4) If you meet the merciful Sat Guru, He will  tell you about the path of returning to the region  from where you have come down. He will guide  you on your homeward journey. Fortunate are  they who have enshrined the merciful Sat Guru in  their hearts. Their boat has reached the shore.  They will cross over the ocean. (5) Attend Satsang.  Take saran (refuge) of Sants. Curb your mind.  Cherish a fervent desire for uniting with the Holy Feet. Keep your Surat detached from body and  mind, and enjoy internal bliss. He who acts thus  will conquer Kai, and be a recipient of nectar of  the Holy Feet. (6) He who follows the precepts  and teachings of Satsang, is a blessed soul. I  sacrifice myself at him again and again. His Surat  is absorbed in the bliss of Satsang, and is sure to  attain the goal. (7) Tulsi Saheb says that he who  has come under the protection of the all-powerful  and merciful Sat Guru is enjoying the greatest  bliss and joy internally. He is one with the  Beloved. The bliss of the Holy Feet is indescribable. (8)

If sincerity and righteousness have not been  cultivated in you, what good is it to read scriptures ?  You read and recite Bhagwat and Gita to people,  and then beg for donations from them. You  outwardly observe abstinence, but cultivate love  for money. It is nothing short of the dance recital  of a dancing girl. (1-2) As soon as the reading or  recital of a sacred book is over, the Pandits gather  together and eagerly look for the collection of money from the listeners. In this way, they plunder  and sack the world. (3-4) Tulsi Saheb says that the  Pandits are only concerned with their fee. They  do not mind whether a donor is poor or prosperous  or pious and neat. This is how the Pandits confer  so called redemption on their clients. But in this  world, these very hypocritical people are taken as  truthful. (5-6)

(49)

The waves of the ocean of worldliness are high  and lofty. Take a companion who can see you  across. Shiva, Sanakadi, Narad, Sarad, Shesh,  Vyas and Shukdev were all drenched in the colour  of Maya, and are wandering in the cycle of births  and deaths. The sages like Shringi and Parasar  were all libidinous. They were overcome with  passion. Anger was common to all of them, and  in the case of most it was uncontrollable. They  were malicious. That is why their penances were  often disrupted. (1-2) Brahma, Vishnu, and all  the ten incarnations openly danced with Maya, not  to say about other worldly people. All are drifting  with the currents of worldly desires. Tulsi Saheb says, "There is both strength and opportunity in this human form. Raise your Surat to Gagan and see flowers blooming, black-bees humming, and lotuses expanding." (3-4)

(50)

Who can understand the ways of Sants, who  show the form of the Formless and tell you about  the unapproachable and unlimited Region. (1)  They assume the coarse physical form and give the  message and reveal the secrets of the formless  Lord. (2) They show the path, nay, they accompany the traveller. They make available the boat of  Shabd, help in crossing the ocean, and securing  release from this world which is dreadful like a  cobra. (3-4) Tulsi Saheb says that all the ascetics call  themselves Sadhs and in proof of their assertion,  they quote from the old religious books. They create  a following for themselves without knowing what  true Guru is. Such self-made religious leaders  cannot escape transmigration. (5-6)

NANAK SAHEB'S SHABDS

(1)

The love and affection shown by the people of  the world is all false. Friend or wife, all are  attracted for their own pleasure. (1) They all proclaim, "You are mine, mine". They have attached themselves to you for their own selfish ends. (2) How strange, none of them keeps you company in the end. (3) Guru Nanak says that he has been instructing this foolish mind day in  and day out, but it does not act upon the advice.  You can cross the ocean (of existence) only when  you sing the praises of the Guru. (4-5)

(2)

All relationships of the world last only till you are alive. Even your father, mother, brother, son, wife and kindred start calling you a ghost as soon as breath leaves your body. They do not keep your body even for a moment; they quickly drive you out. (1-3) Guru Nanak says that the world is illusory like a mirage. You can yourself judge it. Always remember and contemplate Sat Nam. You will be saved. (4-5)

(3)

O man ! know that the world is but a dream, and it perishes in no time. (1) A wall of sand, even though raised and plastered with great care, stays for a short period only, similar is the case with the pleasures of Maya. 0 fool ! why do you get yourself entangled in them ? (2,3) Guru Nanak says, "Be wise. Even now there is time. Nothing has  been lost as yet. Remember Guru, the disposer of  destiny. This is the true religion of Sadhs. I have  proclaimed it to you." (4-5)

(4)

O lived one! Take it for granted that all are after their own joys and pleasures. None cares  for another. (1) In prosperity, everyone gathers  round you. But in adversity none comes near  you. (2-3) Even your wife whom you love so  much, and who clings to you wherever you go,  abandons you when your soul departs from your  body, calling you a ghost. (4-5) Nanak Saheb  says, "This is the way of the world that whomsoever you love is of no avail to you in the end,  save Sat Guru." (6-7)

(5)

0 Jiva ! Remember Sat Nam. Every moment  your age wears off and ultimately this body  becomes lifeless. (1) You have wasted your manhood in sensual pleasures, and childhood in  ignorance. You have now become old, but take  no heed. I know not what folly you are entangled  in. (2) You are utterly unmindful of the Creator  who blessed you with this noble human form. You  do not sing even for a while the praises of the ONE  who is the bestower of redemption. (3) Why are  you proud of Maya ? It does not accompany you in the end. Nanak says, "Dwell on your Creator, the wish-fulfilling jewel. He alone will keep you company in the end." (4)

(6)

None is thy helper except Guru. Mother,  father, son and daughter, none belongs to thee.  (1) Thy riches, lands and other possessions which  thou considerest thine are not thine. When thy  soul leaves the body, they will not go with thee.  Why dost thou, therefore, cling to these ?  (2-3) Guru Nanak says that thou hast not engendered love for the Supreme Being who is  compassionate to the humble and dispeller of  sorrow. This world is but an illusion and thy life is but a night's dream. (4-5)

(7)

Thanks to Sat Guru by whose grace and mercy,  my inner eye has been opened. The Surat rose  like a kite and opened the lock of the door to celestial regions, and began to look at the Beloved  like a chakor looking at the moon. (1-2) My Surat  rushed like a currrent and got across the eight  regions, and saw the Supreme Being there. (3-4)  He is neither with form nor formless. Jyoti and the poor Vedas, Omkar and Kal, none of these has access there. (5-6) Guru Nanak says that true Lord is known only to Sants. All else is hypocrisy. Sat Guru knows the path leading to Him. He graciously initiated me into the secrets, and by His grace, I was able to have His darshan. (7-8)

(8)

The mind of an ego-centric person never  remains under control. It runs towards all others,  but not to the true Lord. Thus it is unable to attain  happiness even in dream, and undergoes pain and  suffering all the time. (1-2) Pandits got tired  studying religious books and ascetics performing  penances. Others got tired by observing rites and  rituals. But none was able to bring the mind  under control. (3-4) The recluses got exhausted,  bathing in the sixty-eight holy places and doning  ochre-coloured clothes. But they were not able to know the real nature of the mind, and remained  disillusioned in ego and superstitions. (5-6) By the  grace of Guru, when some rare and fortunate  Jiva is struck with fear, then only is he able to curb  his mind, and annihilate his ego by practising  Shabd. (7-8) Nanak Saheb says that a Jiva will  attain purification when he comes in contact with  Sat Guru. His Surat will merge in the ocean  of spirituality. He will get the wealth of Nam and true happiness. (9-10)

(9)

O my mind ! Engage yourself in the Sumiran  of Nam, as the life is wearing out every moment.  Man without Guru's Nam is like a bird without  wings, an elephant without tusks, a woman without  husband, a prostitute's son without father, a  pandit without knowledge of the Vedas, a well  without water, a cow without milk, a temple without  light, a tree without fruits, body without eyes,  night without moon, and the earth without clouds.  (1-3) Give up passion, anger, pride and greed. Understand once for all that none is yours in this world. (4)

 (10)

This rare human form is not to be got again and  again. Who knows because of some virtuous  acts of yours you have attained it. Your wealth  of spirituality is diminishing every moment, and  your age is advancing with every breath. In no  time your life will come to an end. (1-2) When  a fruit has fallen from a tree, it cannot stick- again  to the tree. Similarly, the life does not return  after the soul has left the body. So, instead of  entertaining animosity against others, take care  of your own self and make your life fruitful.  (3-4) Get across the ocean (of existence) by means of the boat of Surat. (5) Abandon passion, ego, desires, and all other evils. (6) Nanak Saheb exhorts Jivas to make Nam their support and prop. (7)

(11)

Why do you go out to search God in the  woods ? The Omnipresent Supreme Being, though undetected, abides within all. He also lives  within you. (1) As the fragrance abides in the flower and the reflection in the mirror,  similarly Guru always resides within you. So,  O brother ! search Him within your heart.  (2-3) Guru Nanak says, "The Lord is within,  and also without. This is the wisdom imparted by  the Guru. Without gaining knowledge of your inner  self, the moss of doubt cannot be wiped off". (4-5)

(12)

O Sadho ! mind is difficult to be controlled,  as it keeps company of mercurial desires, and does  not keep itself at peace. (1) Because of anger in  your heart, you have lost your senses. As you  have been cheated of the jewel of knowledge and  wisdom, how can you hold your own against the  wanton mind ? (2-3) Guru Nanak says that Yogis  have despaired, and so also those who mechanically  chant the praises of the Lord. When the  Guru is merciful upon you, you will find the  way. (4-5)

(13)

The ego-centric Jivas invite trouble upon  themselves because they leave their own house and  start peeping into others'. They abandon the way  of righteousness and do not meet Sat Guru. They,  therefore, fall victim to viciousness. (1) They  roam from place to place, and busy themselves in  reading and studying religious books. But they  cannot reduce their desires. Nay, their desires  increase. They have been blessed with the human  body. But they fail to perceive Shabd. They  only fill their bellies like brutes. (2) They become ascetics by colouring their clothes in ochre and taking  a cloth bag for collecting alms. (3) They beg.  alms from door to door, and make a pretence of  imparting knowledge to the world. They are.  themselves in delusion as they have not searched  for Shabd. They have thus lost the chance of  making their life fruitful. (4) They seek fire  outside to warm themselves. They do not know  that fire is blazing inside them. But knowledge of  the inside fire (spirituality) can only be imparted by Guru. Without devoting themselves to the service of Guru, Bhakti (devotion) cannot be attained, and without Bhakti, they cannot realize  their true form. (5) By calumniating and slandering  Guru and devotees, they go to hell. They make  pilgrimages to sixty-eight holy places, but illusions and  delusions are not removed. Without taking saran (refuge) of Guru, the dirt of sins and evil deeds cannot  be washed off. (6) They smear their bodies with ash  and put on an appearance of a holy man. But  they run after Maya (material objects). They do  not know that the Supreme Father pervades both  inside and outside. If they are told so, they become angry. (7) They read scriptures without understanding them. They do not hesitate to tell  lies. This is the way of one who has not adopted  Guru. How can they get happiness without  performing Sumiran (repetition) of Nam ? Without  Nam, they are disgraceful. (8) They shave off  their heads and tie the knot of hair thereon, and  then proclaim that they have renounced the world.  They observe silence and become proud of this  practice. Their wanton minds run in all the ten  directions. This is because they have not gained  any knowledge of the soul. (9) They discard  nectar and take poison. They are mad after Maya  (riches). Without understanding commands of  the Supreme Being, their Karams cannot be wiped  off. They will descend into animal kingdom. (10) They have taken Kamandal[18] and cloth-bag in  their hands, the outward signs of an ascetic. But  their minds are full of desires. Having abandoned  their wives, they cast their eyes on others' wives.  (11) They take disciples, but themselves are  devoid of the knowledge of Shabd. They are  Tiers, low and vulgar. They pretend to be absorbed  in meditation, but their inner self is full of carnal  desires. Such people will be devoured by Jama.  (12) A true ascetic is he who serves Sat Guru,  forgetting about the self. He desires not food and  house. He eats only that which he gets easily  and without asking for it. (13) Whether a householder or a mendicant or a Yogi, he indeed is  blessed who does not talk glibly, is ready to forgive  others, and is engaged in curbing his evil tendencies.  He keeps Guru uppermost in his thoughts. (14) He  is a true ascetic or mendicant who is free from  desire and non-desire. He is engrossed in the  thought of one and only one. He is absorbed in  Shabd and is making progress towards the Original  Abode. (15) Only a Gurumukh (Guru's devotee)  knows of what stuff the mind is made of, and he  alone succeeds in controlling its wantonness. He  acts according to his Guru's instructions and obtains Shabd within himself. (16) Brahma, Vishnu,  Mahesh and all the great souls have been meditating  on Thy name. Thy refulgence is visible in all the  four species of life and heaven and hell. (17) Guru  Nanak says that you cannot be redeemed without  Shabd. You will get across if you apply yourself to  Shabd. You will obtain all happiness by hearing  Shabd internally and will be free from Kal and  Maya. Hence enshrine true Nam in your  heart. (18)

DADU SAHEB'S SHABDS

(1)

Dadu Saheb says that no one knows the status of Sants. They pervade all. They reside within all beings and objects. They are inaccessible and unfathomable. (1) They dwell beyond Sunn, and are distinct both from Nirgun and Sargun.  (2) They are far far away from Pind, And and  Brahmand. Their Surat is one with the Ocean.  (3) They are neither formless nor with form. They  are beyond Jyoti and Brahm. (4) They can be  recognised by him alone who has cut asunder the  bondages of body and mind. (5) Dadu Saheb says  that his heart is riveted on their holy feet; he has accepted their saran (protection). (6)

(2)

All describe what they have heard from others. But Dadu discloses what he has seen with his own eyes. When I gave up lust and greed, my wanton mind was brought under control. (1) When I heard the Anhad Nad[19], I tasted nectar. (2) When my Surat reached the Sunn of Sukhman, my love and faith became steadfast. Beyond Sahas-dal-Kanwal I saw the real self. (3-4) As ghee (butter) cannot be obtained without making coagulated milk and then churning it, similarly without performing the spiritual practices of Sant Mat (religion of Sants), the `Truth' cannot be attained, nor can the bliss thereof be enjoyed. (5-6) The Truth or Sant Mat is quite different from Yoga, Mudras and other  practices of the by-gone days. Whosoever comes  to know of the path of Sant Mat, will be able to  accomplish his task. (7-8) The practitioner perceives  Guru in Gagan and surrenders his body and mind  to Him. Thus the lover meets his Beloved in higher  regions and obtains His darshan. (9-10) •

(3)

Sants alone have the knowledge of Anami Purush (the Nameless Being) who is wondrous, indescribable and omniscient. There are nine lac  (hundred thousand) lotuses in the two eyes or Pind  (below the third Til). The twelfth kanwal (lotus) is  the residence of Shabd-Soami (Sat Purush). (1) Surat  attains purification and rises up like a flash of  lightning and making a roaring sound, takes its  seat at the lotus high up in the sky. (2) That  abode or region is inaccessible and invisible where  Surat is Shabd and Shabd is Surat. (3) I cannot  describe the pleasure of meeting the beloved Lord,  It is like the thrill of a woman's smile. (4) It is  not attainable by Yoga, Gyan, etc. It is an  indescribable story. (5) There is neither the sun  or the moon, nor air or water. How can I describe  that state ? (6) It is neither Sunn, nor Gagan; nor  earth, nor stars. Allah (God), Rab (Lord of the Universe) and Ram (incarnation of Brahm) have no access there. (7) How can I describe it ? It is indescribable. It is known to Sants only. (8) Neither the Vedas, nor the ascetics who don  religious garments, know the secret. Then, how  can anybody testify to what I say ? (9) The merciful Dadu says that eyes reflect the inner  spiritual status. Looking at the eyes of Sants, Surat  bows in thankful homage. (10) 1 am beloved of the  Lord; and the Lord is my beloved. We live together at one place. (11) My Surat has seen the unfathomable  ocean, the source of all. It is known to rare  ones. (12)

 (4)

Dadu says that he obtained darshan of the  Beloved in the mirror of his heart, which made him  intoxicated. At midnight, the moon and stars  were visible, the Surat rose upwards like a yo yo  and the sky burst, and Surat crossed it. (1-2) When  the longing and yearning became keen, my Surat  and Nirat reached the mansion and met the  Beloved there, who bestowed great love; and the  heaven opened up. (3-4) I saw the beginning and the  end of everything. But how can I describe what I saw ?  The secret remains secret. (5-6) Dadu says, "I  know this much that what I obtained was obtained  by applying myself to spiritual endeavours.  Nowhere else did I find the Truth. I am now relieved of the pain and suffering of recurrent birth and death. (7-8)

(5)

Dadu says that he saw the Lord in his heart,  who has neither form nor colour nor line of  demarcation. The God of the Vedas and  other heavenly books is limited. But Dadu talks about the Limitless. (1) Mullas, Sheikhs, Pandits and Saiyeds all adhere to tradition,  convention, superstition and prejudice. The  Supreme Being is quite distinct from Ram, Rahim,  Karim, Keshav, Hari and Hazrat. Some rare Sants  possess His knowledge. (2-4) Dadu says, "I found  Supreme Being by inculcating humility and  annihilating self. How can I describe the Inaccessible  and Indescribable ? Only those who received this  knowledge from Sants were able to find Him, and  then all their illusions and delusions were cleared  away". (5-6)

(6)

You alone are my protector, and none else.  My wanton mind runs in all the directions, and  finds Kal wherever it goes. (1) 1 have tried many ways, but it never stays steady; nay, it goes to the  very direction from which I check it. It runs  arrogantly all the time. (2) My mind is not afraid  of You, and goes where it likes, and does whatever  it is bent upon doing. I feel helpless before it. (3)  All Sadhs admonish it and I myself try my level  best to correct it, but it would not follow the  behests of Guru. It has become fearless and  brazen-faced. (4) Dadu says, 0 Protector ! none  else is mine except You, who can mend this mind.  If only You hold it, then alone can it come  round. (5)

(7)

You are my Lord, and I am your slave.  Whether you kill me by putting my head under an  executioner's axe, or You move the saw on my  head, or You chop off my neck with sword, or  You push me down from sky or mountain, or You  drown me in a river, or You light a fire around me,  or You allow Kal to devour m.- from all the ten  sides, or You may test me on the touchstone, I  accept and submit to all these cheerfully. (1-5)

 (8)

Dadu says that as he proceeded on the path of  Surat Shabd Yoga passing through eight regions  and cast his eyes ahead, he got glimpses of the  Beloved Lord who is inaccessible and free from form  and colour. He is beyond Pind and Brahmand. The  Vadas and other religious books have no inkling  of Him. (1-2) In Sat Lok resides the Impersonal  Being. He is the true Creator. No trace of Kai  and Maya is to be found there. Ram, Rahim, God,  Prophet and incarnations have no access there.  By placing my head at the Feet of all the Sants, I.  was able to discriminate between the real and the  unreal. (3-6)

(9)

Dadu says that ascetics are disillusioned, they  are drifting with the world. Pandits and scholars  are killing themselves by studying six books of  Philosophy and Purans (mythological stories).  Param Hansas and Yogis study Vedas, and call themselves Brahm, pervading all over. Because  of this pride and self conceit, they are not able  to cross over the ocean of existence. (1-4) They  are unable to realize the treachery of the wanton  and unsteady mind and its flights, and that this  body is merely a cloak. They are engrossed in  worldly pursuits and creating ever new attachments  and ties for themselves. They are unable to get  knowledge of the inaccessible path; it is unknown  to Vedas. (5-7)

(10)

Dadu calls the jivas of the world and tries  to explain Truth to them, but they pay no heed.  Shiva, Sanakadi, Shringi and Parasar failed to  achieve their object. (1) Every moment Kal is  thundering over your head. This body is his  feed. Sukhdev, Vyas, Janak and the sage Narad,  all are in Kal's grip. Where do you stand ? You  cannot be saved. Just as the lion finds out the  cow, similarly Kal will find and kill you and  other Jivas. (2-5) All pleasures and wealth are short-lived, just as the reign of a honey-bee is momentary. You strive hard day and night for money, unaware of the fact that you are going to die today or to-morrow. (6-7) The fortunate Jiva, whose Surat has realized Sat Pad (eternal region), will attain freedom from the cycle of transmigration. Dadu says that when the Surat merges into Shabd, hypocrisy vanishes. (8 & 9)

(11)

Dadu regrets that no one listens to him. Kazis  and Pandits are ruining themselves by reading  Vedas and other religions books and going on a  round of pilgrimages. Thus they are going to  perdition. (1-2) Christians got deceived by reading and ruminating over the Bible. Hindus,  Muslims and Christians all the three got  exhausted by observing rites and rituals. (3-4)  Dadu says, "I saw the refulgence of the Lord and  crossed the ocean of existence." (5)

(12)

Dadu says that the world is mad as it worships  stone and water. People make idols and establish them in temples, and give respect by bowing  before them. They offer sandal wood-paste,  flowers and rice to the idol of Shiva, sacrifice goat  before the idol of goddess Durga and place fifty-six  varieties of victuals before the idol of Vishnu.  But they are not awakened. (1-3) They run to the places of pilgrimage, but do not seek the company of Sadhs. That is why they are in the noose of Karmas, and transmigrate in all the four species of life. (4-5) Without Satsang, they cannot know of Truth; they will go astray again and again. (6)

PALTU SAHEB'S SHABDS

(1)

That meditation alone is truly authentic and  reliable in which attention is fixed like a tortoise.  The mother tortoise lays eggs on the dry ground  and then comes back to water. She does not go out  to hatch them. But she rivets her attention on them.  (1) A woman while carrying pitchers of water  on her head, does not hold the same with her  hands. She gossips with her companions, and  walks freely but all the time her attention is  fixed on the pitchers. (2) The snake takes out the  jewel from its head and places it on the ground  and goes far away in search of food. But its  attention is all the time on the jewel. (3) Paltu  Saheb says that he who engages himself in  meditation in the aforesaid manner, will surely  achieve his object. His Surat and attention  will remain aloof from Maya or the material  world. (4)

(2)

When the lamp of Nam is lighted, the mansion,  i. e., innerself, becomes illuminated. The refulgence of Nam or Shabd pervades the whole being,  and translates the Surat (spirit) to Mansarovar.  (1) Intellect becomes pure and righteous. Vicious  thought are cast away, and good understanding  dawns. (2) All the thirty-six ragas (musical modes) become audible within, and the blemish  of three Gunas is washed off. The fortune of  the highest order is brightened up and the pot  of Karms is smashed to pieces. (3) Paltu says  that the darkness of ignorance has been swept away by lighting the lamp of Nam. (4)

 (3)

I became highly delighted on hearing the melodious sound of the flute in Gagan (sky, heaven). I secured entrance into the eighth mansion, where the Shabd of Sohang is resounding. T merged in it (1) Waves after waves arise. The bliss and the merriment of that region are indescribable. I withdrew from the left and the right,, and entered the Sukhmana, the middle current. (2) I became detached from the body and I engendered love for Sat Guru. I opened the tenth door. (3) Paltu says, "When I merged in. the current of Shabd, I saw light everywhere." (4)

(4)

It is high time that you get your sheet cleaned,,  as the washerman may not be available. Your  wrap or sheet is much soiled, go to Sat Guru's  Satsang, where pure water is available. (1) Your  sheet is day by day getting older and older. Make no  delay to get it washed in Satsang by the soap of  knowledge. (2) Remove the stains of Kal and Karam.  Apply the starch of Nam. Having thus got the  sheet cleaned, put it on and cross over the waters of existence. You will not have to come back  again. (3) Paltu Saheb enjoins upon all to be vigilant and careful so that mind is not made dirty and impure. (4)

(5)

Pulverise your mind, so that you may meet  the Beloved. And when you meet the beloved  Lord, you will consider yourself to be the lowliest,  give up favouring one, frowning upon another,  and talking proudly. (1) You will shun name and  fame, and become like a corpse. Even if somebody  abuses or uses harsh words, you will pardon  him. (2) You will always praise others, consider  yourself lowly, and be first in raising your hands  in salutation to all. (3) Paltu Saheb says that you will be the beloved of the Supreme Being. Diamond will shine in your forehead. (4)

(6)

The human body is as transient as the cloud  of smoke. It is like the wall of sand, which  cannot be depended upon. One does not know  when this body will come to an end. As a ripe  fruit once fallen from the tree never grows again.  similarly when this body is destroyed, one can have it again. (1) An unbaked pitcher cannot hold water. A batasha (sugar cake) cannot hold its own when put in water. No reliance can be placed on fire in an explosive. Similarly this life cannot last long (2) Paltu Saheb says that the human body will vanish like dew drops on the grass. (3)

(7)

This body is getting older. You will have to  leave it today or tomorrow. But what a pity  that you cherish a desire to stay in it. All the  three stages (childhood, manhood and old age)  have passed, and you never cared to apply yourself  to Bhajan (devotion). (1) Your hair have turned  grey, even then you are not awake to your  spiritual welfare. On the contrary, you are busy in  amassing money by squeezing it from others. (2)  O friend ! what are you going to do when Kal  is on your head to squeeze your life from your  body ? You cannot avoid death. (3) Pal to  says that even then you remain entangled in  the meshes of Maya and the worldy attachments. (4)

(8)

One must exert utmost. After that, one may  not feel ashamed of defeat or victory. One should  always put one's foot well forward even if the wind  blows with great velocity and opposes one's forward  march. (1) One should never retrieve one's steps  from the battlefield even if one receives wounds  all over the body. One who rises up each time one falls, is a true soldier. (2) One should fight to the finish so that one does not earn a bad name  for one's family. Only the Sat Guru knows the  end. He can accomplish any and everything. (3)  Paltu Saheb says that one should engender love for  Sat Guru. (4)

(9)

I have roamed in all the places of pilgrimage.  I found nothing but stone and water everywhere.  Only those go there who have strayed from the  path of true salvation, and are steeped in Karams.  (1) People walk and walk and bathe and bathe in water wherever they go, and thus get exhausted. But  they are not able to bring their anger and passion  under control. (2) They wash their bodies outwardly,  but their hearts are full of dirt and filth. They get  lost in the worship of stone, and remain unaware of  the greatness of Sants. (3) Paltu Saheb says that Nam  is with Sants. People uselessly indulge in rituals  and observances, but do not seek Nam. (4)

(10)

When you come in contact with Sat Guru, you  will be able to get your mind cleansed of its age  old blemishes. Without taking refuge in Him,  these blemishes would not be removed. (1) The  sword should be scrubbed and polished with the  pumice stone or vitrified brick of Yoga. Next the  plane or rasper or grater of Surat should be passed  over it. Then will one's inner virtues will shine.  (2) One should use the polishing instrument of  Shabd and the corundum stone of Gyan (knowledge)  in furbishing the mind. (3) Paltu Saheb says,  "Put the sword of your mind to the whet-stone of renunciation. The old stains of evil actions will be cleansed. (4)

(11)

Only love and devotion have access to the  court of the Lord. He is pleased with love and  devotion. Krishna refused to partake of the delicious  dishes offered by the king Duryodhan because he was  not a devotee. But he accepted vegetables offered by  Vidur who was low, being the son of a female slave,  because he was inebriated with love and devotion.  (1) The Lord is not pleased with observances,  penances, rites, rituals, etc. Ram gladly ate  berries offered by Shabri with devotion, although  she belonged to an untouchable race. He paid no  attention to Rishis and Munis (Sages), as they were  proud of their penances, and had no love and  devotion in their hearts. (2) When the king  Yudhistira performed Yagya, a host of people were  invited. Their pride was shattered when the bell  did not ring because of the absence of Swapach,  the scavenger, who was a devotee. (3) Paltu Saheb  says, "Do not be proud of your high caste. For, in  the court of the Lord, only love and devotion are  valued." (4)

 (12)

The recluse, forgetting about his own self, seeks the Supreme Being in water. He wanders in all the four directions, but never thinks about his own self. (1) Brahm is present everywhere and pervades everything like fragrance in flower, fire in wood, water in earth, ghee in milk and  redness in henna plant. No place and object is  devoid of Brahm. But just as water cannot be  obtained without digging the earth, similarly one cannot have self-realization and God-realization without Satsang. So says Paltu Saheb. (2-4)

(13)

The whole world is consuming itself in the fire  of doubts and misgivings. Monarchs, kings, nobles,  so-called holymen, gods, human beings, sages, yogis,  mendicants, learned, fakirs, recluses, etc., all are  burning in the fire of delusions and illusions.  Those who are engaged in penances are doubly  suffering. None can escape even if he tries to run away. (1-3) Paltu Saheb says that the devotees of Sants, whose only prop or support is Nam, are saved. (4)

(14)

Stay and abide at the door of a Sant and  slowly and gradually your task will be accomplished.  Surrender body, mind and all to Him, meekly  submitting to His rebuffs. Like a dog, eat what  you get, with the mind riveted at the Holy Feet of  the Master. Leave not His door though you may  be kicked and pushed therefrom thousands of  times. Says Paltu Das, your object shall be achieved if you stand all this. (1-4)

 (15)

0 faqir ! run away from the lioness of woman run away; you will be attacked by her, and you will  then cry. (2) She had overpowered even the sages  like Shringi Rishi who had renounced all and was  living in the forest subsisting on__ air only. None  was saved. (3) Paltu Das says that he alone will be  saved from the onslaughts of Maya, who attends  Satsang carefully and is wide awake to his spiritual  interests. (4)

DARIYA SAHEB'S SHABD

Dariya Saheb says that impenetrable shutters  of the mansion of the Lord have been opened to  him. Lightning flashes as Surat penetrates. The  veil of clouds over the moon is removed and the  frightful darkness vanishes. (1) When love and  yearning are engendered in Surat, it beholds the  moonlight. Surat moves about happily in the firmament and opens the gate of Banknal. (2) Like a spider throwing out threads from its mouth, Surat ascends on the bow and rises up like a current. I  meet my beloved Lord the way a stream joins the  river. (3) My beloved Lord is formless and  invisible, having neither beginning nor end,  neither this side nor that side. Dariya Saheb  says that when he renounces the world and  all that pertains to it, he is able to cross the ocean  of existence. (4)

MIRA BAI'S SHABD

Mira Bai says, "My mind is captivated on witnessing the spectacles of the celestial regions. Whenever the longing for the Beloved overtakes me, tears start flowing from the eyes. (1) 1 have developed intense longing for the Guru. Terrible  anguish of separation from Him has overtaken me.  I spend sleepless nights. Food and water have  become distasteful to me. The pangs of separation  from the Beloved keep me awake all night. (2-4) If I meet the all-knowing physician, [ will narrate my sufferings to Him. He will make me free  from the agonies of transmigration. (5-6) 1 am seeking the secrets of the Beloved's Home. But nobody can tell the same. When I met Sat Guru, Rai Das, He revealed the secrets I was in search of. (7-8) On meeting Him, my sufferings came to an end. I found Him when I had reduced myself to dust and ashes." (9-10)

NABHAJI'S SHABD

Nabhaji says, I Play in the Nabh (sky) and move  about happily in the Kanwal (Sahas-dal-kanwal). I cleanse the mind and the eye-mirror. Kal feels ashamed. Above the lotus of two petals, i. e., above the third Til, lightning is flashing every moment, and the Jyoti (flame) is visible. (1) Beyond 07 And, my Surat sees the beautiful Sunn, which is the essence of the creation below.  Surat rushes to the fortress and merges in Shabd.  (2) These are esoteric spectacles which cannot be  described, nor can they be compared with anything  else. The stream has merged in the ocean. In  the ocean, water and its waves are one and the same.  Similarly, Guru (Master) and Chela (disciple) are one there. (3) I have subdued my mind and gladly taken Guru's prashad (sanctified food), which is difficult to get and which opened my inner eye. What I saw, has made me happy beyond description. (4)

SURDASJI’S SHABDS

(1)

The Surat of Surdas secures ingress to a  region where the melodious flute is audible. He  reaches Nabh (sky, celestial region) where Anhad  Shabd is resounding. As he hears it, the rust of  impurity of the mind-mirror is removed. He  drinks amrit (nector) (1-2) His Surat knows the Truth and merges in the Sant Pad (region of Sants). (3) The variegated spectacles are to be seen within. Pind and Brahmand are also within (the human microcosm). (4) Breaking open the firmament, his Surat soars high up like an Alalpaksh[20]. It turns  back and merges in itself, i.e., Surat appears in its  pure form. In other words, it reaches the region  of Akshar Purush. (5) It goes still higher up,  (vision)  beyond Akshar Purush, and gets darshan  of Nih-Akshar before whose splendour and grandeur  millions of Krishnas feel ashamed. (6) Surdas has  realized the Truth, which is invisible and formless.  (7) He has found the abode of Sat Guru high up in  the celestial region. The drop has merged in the ocean; the Surat has merged in its Source. (8)

(2)

When the soul has left your body and flown  away like a bird, all the leaves of the tree of your life  will fall off. (1) Never feel vainglorious for this  body, as it will either be eaten up by jackals, crows  and vultures or will rot and putrify and ultimately  turn into dust. (2-3) After death, neither the  attractive eyes and glamorous beauty nor the colour  and form remain. Those whom you have been  loving in the life time, will dislike and hate your  dead body. (4-5) Sons, whom you have brought  up with great care and tenderness and adopted  several modes to propitiate gods and goddesses  for their welfare, will break your skull with a  bamboo after your death. The members of your  household will see that your dead body is soon  taken away from the house, lest you should become  a ghost and give them trouble. (6-8) 0 fool ! wake  up even now and apply yourself to Satsang. You  will be benefited by moving in the company of  Sants and devotees. (9) Surdas says that those  who do not engage themselves in devotion to Guru  even after being blessed with the noble human  form, will surely go to hell. Without performing  Bhajan or making spiritual endeavours as taught by  Sants, the human life will go waste. (10-11)

DHARAM DASJI'S SHABD

0 Guru ! Lord of lords ! Bestow on me the  gift of devotion. I may never be forgetful of Your  holy feet, and may ever remain in Your service. (1)  I may not be entangled in the round of pilgrimages,  the observances of fasts, and the worship in temples.  By thought, word and deed, I may not think of  anybody except You as my real benefactor. (2) 0  my All-Powerful Benefactor ! I desire not eight  kinds of supernatural powers or nine treasures nor  a place in heaven. (3) 0 my Guru ! I may never  desire, even in dream, pleasures, property, family,  wealth and beautiful wife. (4) 0 Omnipotent Guru ! please listen to the prayer of Dharam Das for the grant of Your darshan and making him Your own. (5)

GOODAR SAIN'S SHABD

My beloved Lord has sent me a bodice, with  a print of five and nine patterns. I have become  (1) The robe was tied  priceless by putting it on.  to my body and mind. Its fastenings were opened  by Sat Guru. (2) My marriage having been solemnised, the day is approaching when I will leave my  parent's house and go to my husband's home in a  sedan of gyan (knowledge) and dhyan (meditation).  (3) How fortunate that I now belong to my husband, beloved Lord's home. All about the parent's house has slipped off my memory. (4)

DULAN DASJI’S SHABDS

(1)

He who wants to engage himself in devotion  should cultivate dislike for worldly objects and  pleasures, and, abandoning pride and prestige, he  should adopt humility. (1-2) He should always keep  his attention riveted at the Feet of Lord and  keep the flame of love and faith ablaze. In the  Gagan Mandal (higher region) glitters jewellery. Why do you not take your mind and Surat there ? (3-4) Shesh is endowed with thousand tongues to sing the praises of the Lord,  but he has failed to describe Him as He is. So  have the Vedas miserably failed to gauge His  omnipotence. Brahma, Shiva, Sanakadi, etc., all  have failed to find Him. (5-6) Nanak and Kabir  have revealed the secret of the Lord, the Supreme  Being. Devotees like Dhurva and Prahlad remained  absorbed in devotion. (7-8) Devotion is enhanced day by day in the company of Sadhs. Dolan Das, therefore, exhorts all to engage in the Sumiran (repetition) of NAM. Kal will be vanquished. (9-10)

(2)

As long as there is life, you should, giving up  sloth and laziness, devote yourself to the Holy Feet  of Guru. (1) There is no certainty of this body.  It comes and goes like an ebb and flow of the tide. It  takes no time to take birth and die. Why feel  proud of it. (2-3) This world is the creation of the  Creator. Remember His Name. (4) Today is the  best time to remember Him, as no one knows  what is going to happen to-morrow. The world  is the place of botheration. Nothing accompanies  anyone. (5-6) Dulan Das says, "Apply yourself to devotion with faith. You will attain Nam." (7)

(3)

0 mind ! 0 my friend ! Make endeavours to  rise to higher regions, and see the spectacles of  moonlight, stars, diamonds, jewels and pearls. (1-2)  Rest on the bed spread on Sukhmana, where nobody  will disturb you. Dolan Das says that by the grace  of his Guru, Jag Jivan, he will not come back to this perishable world. (3-4)
